My recording of Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor “Quasi una fantasia”, Op. 27, No. 2, 1st movement (Moonlight Sonata), composed by Beethoven in his early 30’s.

In my original recording I had hit some incorrect notes and even omitted a note in the bass.  In this recording I have corrected all mistakes.

I also took the photo of the moon.

Moonlight Sonata (1st Movement)

Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune is the third movement of his Suite Bergamasque, written for solo piano and completed in 1905. The title, meaning “Moonlight,” is inspired by Paul Verlaine’s poem, evoking a serene and reflective atmosphere. The piece epitomizes French Impressionism, focusing on mood and imagery over traditional form.
Structure and Atmosphere

The piece is in ternary form (ABA):

    Opening (A):
    A soft, flowing melody emerges over delicate arpeggios. The music feels weightless, like moonlight shimmering on water. Debussy uses rich harmonies and seventh chords to create a dreamlike quality, with a tender, introspective mood.

    Middle Section (B):
    The dynamics intensify, with fuller textures and soaring melodic lines. This section brings a sense of emotional depth and urgency, contrasting with the calm opening. Arpeggios cascade dramatically, giving the impression of moonlight suddenly brightening or revealing hidden beauty.

    Closing (A):
    The opening material returns, slightly varied, fading into a gentle, whisper-like conclusion. The piece ends as quietly as it began, leaving a sense of stillness and wonder.

    Harmonics: Debussy’s use of whole-tone scales, parallel chords, and non-functional harmony creates a suspended, ethereal soundscape.
    Melody: The lyrical melody floats effortlessly above the accompaniment, expressing both simplicity and emotional depth.

This final movement is again in C# Minor and is presented as Presto Agitato which is "fast, agitated." I used three piano samples for this, electric, 5 meter grand and Distant Mountain Grand to get the space into the music.

Ah, Ludwig van Beethoven, thou art so HUGE! So immense! This is my recording of "Moonlight Sonata" or as it is actually titled, Quasi una Fantasia which translates to "sonata in the manner of a fantasy". This is the second sonata from the Opus 27 and was written in 1801. The name, moonlight sonata, was actually penned by Ludwig Rellstab who thought the piece reminded him of the moons reflection off of lake Luzern in Switzerland.

The sonata breaks with normal form in that it is represented as a slow movement, a little faster movement and then a fast movement. Traditionally a sonata would be fast movement, slow movement, and finally an ending fast movement.

I create electronic music in the spirit of Tomita and Wendy Carlos. I also like to rock and am into Pink Floyd. I have been a user of Cakewalk since version 1.0 and currently use Reason, Cakewalk and Audacity along with a studio full of electronic instruments and effects. I play with local musicians and I work at composing electronic renditions of classical music.
