There was a song that my mom would always play on the piano until she could no longer push the keys. After she passed, I learned to play it on the guitar, and years later, my sister and I wrote this song to the melody. The Piano Song tells the story of my mother and the mystery in the grey space between the ebony and ivory. I was told my great-grandmother also played the piano until her husband wouldn’t let her. As little kids, my parents always talked about our hands, the potential we had to play, and what our reach would be on the keys. They pushed us to play the piano, knowing the world that opens when you connect with an instrument. The Piano Song is my journey into that world, where time dissolves, between life and death, black and white. The space between where my mother now exists, a place I too can visit through song.

I make a variety of musical compositions, ranging across multiple different genres and styles. From Techno, Lofi Hip Hop and Jazz Fusion to Experimental Folk, Noise Music and Classical Piano Pieces.

Madeleine Froncek is multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter currently based in Boulder, CO. She started songwriting after the death of her mother and writes songs as a meditation on grief, self-discovery and transformation. Froncek started her musical career as an upright bass player influenced by the legacy of Ray Brown. She is a founding member of Austin band’s Ley Line and Steel Betty and has toured both nationally and internationally since 2016. She is a twin, a lover of nature and a storyteller.
