___How deep is it ?___

1/ What does the word "deep" evoke for you when associated with music?

Mario Penati: "By definition, I will associate deep music with the music that is going to give me the most emotions, that is going to touch me in the deepest part of my little music-loving being. So I think it's a very personal notion.
For me, it can be downtempo, but in general I'll prefer uptempo dance beats, which invite repetition and a kind of musical trance/self exploration. It's like an adrenaline shot, but you live it from the inside, and it's as much in your feet as in your head."
My first real memory of deep music is listening to St. Germain's "Boulevard" album on my music player when I was 16, with my parents and brother in the car late at night, driving in Paris. Musically, everything I like comes from this musical awakening."

2/ What sounds or instruments or voices give you a particular emotion, and why?

Mario Penati: "If there's a Fender Rhodes, it's all good! I'm kidding, but we're not that far off. As far as I'm concerned, it's largely going to be instrumental electronic music associated with sounds drifting from jazz, soul, disco... The basis is going to be pianos, synthesizers with quite smooth sounds, a very distinct bass line, and a groovy drum machine. Then you add percussion, vocals, sax solos, vibraphone and other instruments... Anyway, it's always " warm " sounds, with a real soulful core.
Finally, what I prefer is the duality between a very danceable groove and a very intimate, soulful and sometimes melancholic musicality.

3/ In the selection you are going to play, choose 2 tracks and explain why they are "deep" for you?

Mario Penati: "I decided to start with one of my favorite tracks, "The City" by the duo Mark - Almond released in 1971 on their first album. There is something very intimate and melancholic about it, but groovy and warm sounding too. The arrangements and lyrics are splendid. Combined with some nice memories, it makes it very deep for me.
I also play a very nice track: "Regard" by Mr. YT, released in 1998 on his "Parfum EP". Typically "deep" for me; a melancholic vibe, a minimalist but very present bass, drums patterns largely influenced by jazz, synth pads that send us into the clouds, all arranged in the most beautiful way on 8mn26s. An invitation to travel, music for the mind, the body and the soul."
