Duke Hugh, hip-hop producer/musician/alcoholic, is a master of flipping soul samples and turning them into golden-era-esque beats. It's awesome. I had to ask for a Marinate Mix. He says, "When I got home I got the decks and some vinyl out and just went with the flow hope you like it, it's a lot of different stuff." His mix is 40 minutes of chilled-out hip-hop jams from Common's "Interlude #3" to funky favorites like, Tom Browne's "Come for the Ride". Do yourself a favor...kick off your shoes, pour a drink and soak in this.

Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.

​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

This mix is a selection of personal faves from this fascinating era.

DISCO #6 — DANCE DUB ADVENTURE

I have been recording mixes for 29 years & this might be one my favourite sets ever. 

It seems I've grown to love long emotive arches – within songs as well as in programming. And Songs Not Tracks lets me do just that.

I get to showcase a variety of beautiful dance music I've been obsessed with. I can let it unfold over multiple hours, as an open-to-close club set would: with "the patience of an opening set, the drama of peak time, and the tender emotionality of closing a night" (quote from DJ Voices, one of the best writers in the dj realm).

Selections cover 5 decades and include many of my fave new releases of 2024. Once again house is front & center, but as always, surrounded by adjacent vibes (ok ok, you don't really get a real house song until 45 minutes in or so 😎) 

We begin slow, but start building soon enough. Eventually we get to peak time drama... and close with tender emotionality.

Love from Helsinki to all TINPE crew! This is Ocean People, sometimes known as DJ Anonymous. My city is great, but also pretty far out, so I’ve been doing mixes to connect with folks since I was a kid – 1995 to be exact.

I bring you a selection of 70’s Philadelphia productions that I absolutely ADORE. 

There Is No Planet Earth readers know that Philly as a sound played a pivotal role in the evolution of dance music. I discovered it 20 years after the fact in the 90’s – and it was a REVELATION. 

I have vivid memories of hearing My Love Is Free (by Double Exposure, produced by Norman Harris) for the first time. I was like, what are these uplifting rhythms & melodies? How can a song be almost 10 minutes and still go so hard? Where can I find more? 

This set me on a path of music discovery that has come to define my life & DJ practice. Philly led to the full spectrum of 70’/80’s dance music, which in turn led to house and all of its children. 

And here I am, 25+ years later, still getting hyped over Norman Harris productions. 

Philly producers left us with larger-than-life songs that will never die (Love Is The Message, anyone?). This guest mix showcases selections that hold the same amazing power, but never got the same attention. Many are special edits – by myself & others. I hope you enjoy the vibe.
