"Ask any Detroit techno artist about his or her influences and you’ll undoubtedly be regaled with stories about The Electrifying Mojo, a sci-fi visionary who ruled the Detroit airwaves while radio was still unrestricted. “He was an underground cult hero,” says Juan Atkins. “We would listen to him religiously every night.”

An enigma through and through, Mojo has rarely shown his face in public, refusing to be photographed and only granting a select number of interviews. Like the Wizard of Oz, Mojo was a voice behind a curtain or – in his case – a radio microphone. Although he mostly remains a mystery, his influence on Detroit techno is as clear as day. Mojo not only played the first techno records on air – A Number of Names’ “Sharevari” and Cybotron’s “Alleys of Your Mind” – but he also laid down a solid foundation of guitar funk and machine funk for techno’s development. “I think without The Electrifying Mojo, we wouldn’t have had Detroit techno the way that we know Detroit techno,” says Carl Craig"

Maria aka @m_charlotte is our new hero. She strolled over to HRD one day, with a stroller full of records, after a full day at the J-O-B. Then she proceeded to casually lay down this enticing, impeccably conducted 3-hour journey through space, time & rhythm.

NY has had a lot of exciting clubs now, but after 9/11 there was a lengthy period of time when they were few and far between.

This is when Meatpacking District’s APT reigned supreme. It was small, hard to find (by design) and hard to get in (also by design). It had a diverse & open-minded music policy that attracted an amazing parade of DJ’s. Everyone from DJ Premier to Theo Parrish to James Murphy to Stacey Pullen played there over it’s 9 year run.

APT also had a wild Sunday night party that sometimes went until noon on Monday. The mix here is from that party: it’s DJ Duane’s late night guest set, recorded sometime in 2005, and it still sounds amazing.

DJ Duane aka Duane Harriott(who is best known for his re-edits under Bim Marx & Devin Dare monikers, the popular Negroclash party & his long-running WFMU residency) keeps it deep & pumping, selecting mostly house with occasional acid & techno vibes mixed in - just what one needs 4am on a Sunday night 😎

Another blast from the past: In 2004 I did a mix of songs taken from 70's soul albums that were overlooked here just because they were so common locally. Many of them were imported in bulk as so called cut-outs when the U.S. distributor deleted the title and got rid of remaining stock. Stylistically the mix leans towards the mellower end of seventies soul with a few discoey tracks towards the end. The reception was so good that I ended up doing a second volume two years later. I'll post that one soon as well.

Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.
​​
​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

For longer than anyone can remember, Mika Snickars has been known for his eponymous record shop in Stockholm, Sweden (since 1995, in fact). He’s been a versatile DJ even longer, starting at 3rd grade school discos.  

Mika’s knowledge is deep + wide and his vinyl excursions are legendary (who else caught multiple og Beat Bops in the wild?). 

Through his passion he has gone to influence several generations of Nordic dj’s and producers (not to mention other record stores).

What we have here is a timeless mp3 artifact from a time when Mika was one of the very very few dj's pushing disco in the Nordics. 

Many of the songs here are considered underground classics now, but back in 2000, before vinyl internet as we know it, they were just underground. From the gospel vibes of NYCC to the boogie masterclass of SASS, selection is flawless & life-affirming 🧡

More so than any other account, TINPE’s daily archival feed seems to have captivated lovers of underground dance music & club culture everywhere. Certainly, it has captivated me & keeps delivering the kind of musical joy that is hard to come by on these socials.

So I’m extra honored to post a guest mix by TINPE creator Ben Manzone. The mix came about through shared musical history: turns out we both used to be DEEP into obscure underground disco. 

15 years ago, Ben (as Benguin), Love On The Run and Fox 50 ran Foreal People, a deep cut disco party that took place in various New York locations. Those included Lucky Cat in BK (long gone) and Meatpacking District’s legendary APT (also long gone, and incidentally first venue I played at in NYC). 

Ben’s new guest mix revisits selections from Foreal People days. And trust me, old records are still fresh! Some of the jams have become better-known via streaming and reissues, while others still remain a little mysterious. No track-listing for now, but Shazam is your friend (except when it isn’t 😎)

South Africa 🇿🇦 has now claimed it's rightful place in the world of pop & electronic music. Meanwhile, Tyla, Black Coffee, DJ Lag and others have become global household names.

The roots of South African music run DEEP. Since the days of Miriam Makeba, the country has produced a stream of unique music and developed multiple homegrown scenes.

Some essential reissues & compilations notwithstanding, huge chunks of this heritage remain unheard here in the north. Through this 3 hour live mix, seasoned selector & archivist Galactic Mace aims to alleviate that. 

Through a network of connections, he has sourced a selection of hot RSA dance jams covering styles from disco to bubblegum and kwaito to house. Most songs were only ever released locally on cassette, vinyl or CD.

This past winter, HRD together with Do U Remember House (DURH) kicked off a Sunday afternoon dance jam called LUV DANCIN. These afternoon sessions turned out to be some of the most inspiring, uplifting dance parties we’ve ever had. Much love & gratitude for everyone who joined!

We just uploaded full 4 hours from April’s LUV DANCIN, with DURH collective at the controls. Over the past year or two, the crew has become some of HKI’s most prominent proponents of house & dance culture. Their sets always seem to feature a fresh mix of classics and contemporary tunes from across the globe.

Club U-Haul is maybe the most energetic, exciting party in HKI. Wekesa, suinner & trabelsi have fostered a community that is very much needed here. In the process they have introduced the city to a spectrum of new sounds from the global south & beyond.

U-Haul team together with resident DJ Shy Grl did a HRD dungeon takeover some weeks back & it turned out to be EXTRAORDINARILY fun. As expected,  music was hot through & through. We're happy to share the live recording with you all.

I have been recording mixes for 29 years & this might be one my favourite sets ever. 

It seems I've grown to love long emotive arches – within songs as well as in programming. And Songs Not Tracks lets me do just that.

I get to showcase a variety of beautiful dance music I've been obsessed with. I can let it unfold over multiple hours, as an open-to-close club set would: with "the patience of an opening set, the drama of peak time, and the tender emotionality of closing a night" (quote from DJ Voices, one of the best writers in the dj realm).

Selections cover 5 decades and include many of my fave new releases of 2024. Once again house is front & center, but as always, surrounded by adjacent vibes (ok ok, you don't really get a real house song until 45 minutes in or so 😎) 

We begin slow, but start building soon enough. Eventually we get to peak time drama... and close with tender emotionality.
