To celebrate Record Store Day 2014 BBE present to you two previously unreleased gems from the vaults, remixed by Glasgow's answer to Walter Gibbons, Al Kent.

"When Did You Stop" by The J's was criminally overlooked on its initial release in 1977 except on certain dance-floors in the north of England. Al Kent included the 12 inch version on his Disco Love Volume 2 for BBE, and while we did the licensing deal we discovered the original tapes were still safe and sound. So Al excitedly set to work creating a more disco friendly version of the song, taking influence from his hero Walter Gibbons, which quickly became a highlight of his DJ sets. We thought it was finally time to share this one with the rest of the world.

Similarly, Sandy Barber's "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own" was a big northern hit, but didn't receive much commercial success. And, like the J's, the inclusion on Disco Love 2 revealed a lock up containing the original tapes. Al's instrumental "Disco Jam" version appeared on our deluxe edition re-release of Sandy Barber's album alongside some John Morales mixes, but this "Classic Version" has remained unreleased until now. It doesn't seem possible that the original version could be bettered, but in Al's capable hands it's been transformed into a stunning seven minutes of soulful beauty.

Earlier this month Elyte and Cnyce’s interstellar Soul Clap ship descended on Jæger with the full force of Sun Ra’s most cosmic determination. Holled up in our basement the entire night, they brought the might of a Bootsy Collins platform down on Oslo, with their Funk-determined vision of an electronic future narrated by Mad Max.
Captivating and energetic, their set skated through dance music from the 70’s to the present on a celestial trajectory where no man has ventured before, their destination set to mark the release of their latest- and second album, “Soul Clap”. Like “EFUNK” before it this latest album is a highly intoxicating punchbowl of musical influences concocted from the group’s most primal experiences on the dance floor, distilled for your most hedonistic listening pleasures.
Tracing a line from their Funk roots, with syncopated, bouncing live drums, oozing cool bass-lines, and vocals that call out at you from some foggy hazy corned of a dance floor like a siren song, Soul Clap is undeniably a soul Clap album from cover to cover, while at the same time plotting perhaps a new orbit for the Soul Clap ship.

Det Gode Selskab’s Phillip Hinz  took on the early shift on Sunday to lay down the latest episode of the Æ mix. Upholding Det Gode Selskab philosophy of less is more, Phillip ventures into he starkest corners of House for this mix, playing in lower tempos and legato synth manoeuvres for his hour at the decks. Where minimal and micro conspire amongst icy electronics on the backdrop of House music legacy, Phillip’s mix resides, featuring artists like Christopher Rau, French Fries and labels like Rekids. As a DJ, Hinz often favours the warmer climes of a Chicago workout in the sonic palette of Tech House and this mix is no different. It’s just a little taste of what he brings to Det Gode Selskab week in and week out, and keeps us keen until next Sunday rolls around.
