Up next on Phonica Premieres is a seriously groovy cut from International Soleil Band off the new Soundway 12".  Ta Lassa is an '80s West African Disco crossover from the International Soleil band straight outta Guinea. Composed by Gnamakoron Sidi Diabaté it was originally featured on an album released in 1983 by French Warners offshoot WAM (West African Music) - a short lived label that recorded about 20 releases of West African music released in France. Also Featuring Mory Djely Kouyate this track was a staple of the 22 band's repertoire in the 1970s (in which many of the ISB played) - famous for their recordings on the legendary state-run Editions Syliphone label. We've decided to premiere the extended (DJ friendly) Hide & Smile edit on the A side. There's throbbing bass and keyboard interplay punctuated by classic Guinee guitar lines, metronomic drumming and 80s synth sweeps eventually drops into a more recognisable Guinean vocal outing. Back for his already third run on the label, Berlin-based producer Berobreo returns to Sundries to take care of the 2nd vinyl release in the catalogue.

Undeniably funky from start to finish, the 'What Can You Read On It's Thoughts' EP is all about those driving basslines and clean cut samples that have become synonymous with Berobreo's output over the past two years. While the A side, featuring the title track alongside another rather 'Delightful Affair', is probably the funkiest of the two with some serious old-school flavour sprinkled all over, the flip provides a bit more punch with 'Migrante' and especially 'Pina Colada' slowly taking this one into the early hours.

Discogs pages don’t lie, can’t embellish or mislead.  They lay bare an artist’s production and output.  Aliases, labels and birth names come together to lend focus on a community that so often seems disguised.  Nicola Loporchio’s aka “Nico Lahs” artist page is a proper curriculum vitae.  A starting point if you are unfamiliar with his name or Cosmic Garden or his releases on Hot Haus or Royal Oak.  

After having been relatively quiet over the last 5 years (aside from a couple remixes), this Bari born and based drummer / musician Nicola Loporchio, better known as Nico Lahs, is back with nothing less than a statement to Detroit and Chicago roots.

A 2xLP, “Freedom” rightfully received the full treatment from Detroit founded label Adeen Records, which put together remixes from Chez Damier, Camille Migas and Jef K. The whole trip is low swung, vibey and possesses a level of authenticity not often achieved outside the States.

The title track opens side A with rumbling MPC samples that brings any fan of Dilla forward in their seat.  It’s immediately bigger than just house..., it’s jazz and hip-hop and house.  It's funk, it’s everything, it’s Freedom.  A statement of intent that crystalizes Nicola’s admiration for the original innovators of the midwest.

“A Beautiful Thing” or “Deep Da Futa” could bath one of those glorious Movement Detroit BBQs but save “Never Come” for a lazy, rainy morning and serve with hot tea.  “Nu Frontiers” is for the OGs after the sun fades and when the lights come out. Highly recommended.
