In Ahab EP our storytellers Hülshoff and Rheinländer bring much more than just the typical songs. Drawing inspiration from different backgrounds, the duo bends traditional music genres into metaphor and storytelling through mystical melodies.

Among steadily added layers of sounds, the verses remain strictly instrumental with a diverse bass line, telling the story of our captain Ahab and his relentless pursuit of Moby Dick, the white whale that eventually ends his life. Steady on now, on the melodic sea, he never hesitates, on towards the rest of the story.

Melodic "pings" ring out like incessant memories in the mind of Captain Ahab, distracting his thought processes and interrupting his ability to function. The further development of the darker tones on this EP, calls us to imagine in more detail the terrific power of the beast over the man and become much more assimilated with the captain's obsession and the preoccupation of his mind.

Following him like his crew on the sea, industry colleagues are provided with excellent original material to work with. Alex Kaminski along with Metatext and Karhua, act as his crew on this EP, looking toward the captain of the ship, following him on this oceanic journey. In metaphor for the duo's talent and ability to influence and persuade with their music, they lead his loyal crew on a wild frenzy to conquer the nemesis, despite the warnings, and to his own deluded end.

Hülshoff and Rheinländer - Ahab (Metatext & Karhua Backyardscience Remix)

Saint Petersburg’s based duo Andre P & Droomie was formed by two old school mates after some years of musical experience, Andre as a DJ, who was spinning before mostly at underground Asian parties in Goa, Bali, Japan and Droomie as a bass guitar player in several local rock bands.
Le Megot (or Kolyma) is a old Russian prisoners song performed also by French actor and singer Yves Montand in late 70’s both on French and Russian. Andre P & Droomie made a remix including sound of viola of Moscow musician Vartan Darakchian. The cover was presented by Anastasia Smuk.

It's been a while since I published a self-made track. I'm a musician, but I'm not a great audio engineer, which makes me shy when it comes to publishing tracks. But this year I'm starting to get rid of unnecessary fears and shyness. This is my sound. In these sounds are my messages. It may not sound so professional, but I'd rather dig up the buried giant, than let it sleep forever. Otherwise, there might come a time when no one knows what's underneath anymore. 
I hope that in this year 2020, many new songs will rise to the surface :) 
The title of the song comes from the book of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, who protected me and gave me light this year.

I Choose To See The Beauty

One of the things that has really struck me during the last four months, is this collective feeling of yearning; a tender longing for interhuman interaction. Since it has been lacking in our lives, I’ve noticed a real softening into that desire. Behind all that has been going on in the world, there is this longing for connection. Beneath the surface of the planet, there is a mycelial network that connects and nourishes all life. Never have I felt more the presence of this desire for the roots of distant trees to reach out and grow together.

The sense of touch is one of the fundamental building blocks of being human. I watch in my garden a pair of magpies together in one tree and a pair of woodpigeons in another; the newborn bees all dancing with eachother in the sky and hugging the blossoming flowers; branches grow towards other branches and leaves emerge in community. After the stillness of Winter, the natural world springs into joyous expression and co-creation. And I watch this through a glass window. And through a screen I read expressions of tenderness from kindred souls, physically separated, wanting for closeness.

This feeling is not static, though- it undulates across a spectrum, to a place of appreciation that we are all, and always, in connection. The mycelial network that connects every tree in the forest runs through us all. I take comfort knowing that we share a kinship with all life, that we all howl under the same moon, and that we all breathe the same air. And yet I acknowledge the privilege of my position; that I can breathe freely, without a knee against my neck. I yearn so deeply for a world where clean air can be freely breathed by all lungs.

This mix has been primarily inspired by the feeling of yearning for connection felt over the last few months, but the tragic murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor have brought to the forefront a whole other yearning- a yearning for equality and a world free from oppression; a yearning that we shine a light within onto our blindspots, acknowledge them, and transmute them into empathy.
