HTRK - Give It Up

One year on from their debut, Rainer Veil explore deep, brittle rave variants on their 2nd EP for Modern Love. The five tracks of 'New Brutalism' are a product of their Northern environment, making pointed reference to the kind of deep-rooted rave heritage documented in Mark Leckey's 'Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore' soundtrack through a prism of angular, vulnerable club music. Conceptually, It adopts a similar perspective on British nightlife to Burial or Lee Gamble, surveying the 'floor as if during an out-of-body experience or through closed eyes from a corner of the club at 5am. Opening track, 'UK Will Not Survive' captures that sensation beautifully with its tape-saturated layers of wistful vocal, woody 2-step and daubs of Reese bass, whilst 'Three Day Jag' isolates that curious blend of hedonism and introspection innate to early UK 'ardcore, albeit without the narco-sweats. Closing number 'Run Out' doffs a cap to grey building sites and strobe-lit clubs alike, channelling diffuse field recordings and half-heard breakbeats with a bleary-eyed, tired and emotional quality.

UK Will Not Survive

 7 months on from TP#4, Demdike return with the 5th instalment in their ongoing research and development series - a double-headed monster split between gnarly reductions on the A-side, and industrial strength edits on the flip. ‘Procrastination’ edges through Grimey detritus and gunshot snares within a vast open space perfectly primed for that Demdike slow build. ‘Past Majesty’ on the flip offers up a feral take on some kind of cyber-industrial insanity, somewhere between Ministry and Powell - with a denouement which should probably come with a public health warning attached to it. All we’re saying is - watch yr eardrums.

Seeing Myttys perform at H2Ö festival in Turku last summer was a jaw dropping experience. Certainly my favourite set amongst a damn fine line up and I demanded to release something of theirs before they'd even packed away their stuff.

I'd known Heta for years via Olimpia Splendid/Toblerones and Samuli from when he came to play with Clouds. The idea of them as a duo had gold stars written all over it but the results are far beyond my already high expectations. This is one of the best tapes I'll ever put out.

Delving in to the music and attempting to describe what I hear was quite a daunting task and my notes got kinda fun in the process. 
For example Lenak and Street Person made me think of Drunken Fist Kung Fu. Heta's effortlessly cool vocals (and the occasionally perfectly placed scream) echoed by either an imaginary twin sister or the weirdo boy next door. 
Ekkä Ota comes across like an off kilter hip hop soundtrack for a Sci-Fi film. 
Kallupää, Pamsypak and some of the interlude tracks sound, to my ears, beautifully close to the Broadcast and The Focus Group experiments of the "Witch Cults of the Radio Age" album and I hear traces of early Múm stuff in Paksotal. 
Another favourite Foliojakku holds its own unique beauty, quite different from the other tracks. Its machine music with heart and grace which builds and builds until waves of submarine echo's and rapid morse code sequences wash over you. 
Oh and the title track Sloggilukio is the bees knees! 

Certain parts of some of these tunes veer into territory only Finns seem to get away with. I find this hard to explain but there is a certain kind of relaxedness I often hear amongst my favourite Finnish bands which oozes either tons of self confidence or a massive indifference to not fitting into any kind of musical category. Or both. This unpindownable quality is what makes me instinctively trust most of the music which comes my way from there, in whatever form, yet I'm also aware of how blessed I am to have got to know the Fonal/Avarus etc crew so early on. 
The experiments they all create help make that country shine to me and I'm dead proud to finally be able to play a small part in that great history

'Love is the Capital' the debut LP by Hiro Kone, the recording alias of Nicky Mao. The album is a follow-up to the incredibly well received 'Fallen Angels' cassette, bringing with it some of Mao's most emotionally and politically driven work yet. It is Hiro Kone’s long coming opus, examining a number of all-too-relevant themes: capital, the state, egoism, anxiety, and steadfast optimism. 

The eight songs on 'Love is the Capital' highlight Mao’s austere, politicized techno battling for the greater good. Songs are visceral meditations of rhythm, noise, and melody in the vein of Pan Sonic, Chris & Cosey, Muslimgauze, and Kangding Ray.

The sounds were often recorded in scenes of isolation, whether physically or emotionally. “Infinite Regress” was during a trek with Roxy Farman (Wetware) up to the sleepy, upstate NY town of Palenville. There, frozen in a cabin with the most DIY of recording booths, Mao recorded Roxy’s vocals and what would be the track that would put into motion the entire album.“Less Than Two Seconds” was written in a single afternoon in late December 2015 when it was revealed that the grand jury had declined to indict the police officer who shot to death 12-year old Tamir Rice.

The taut techno, industrial minimalism, and aural upheaval is embedded in tracks “Rukhsana” (featuring Drew McDowall, formerly of Coil & Psychic TV, on modular synthesizer), “The Place Where Spirits Get Eaten,” and “Less Than Two Seconds,” an emotionally wrought blitz of serrated Monomachine tones flanked by timeless recordings of essayist, poet, and social writer James Baldwin. Mao ventures deep into heady, prismatic runs of hypnotic techno, on “Don’t Drink the Water” and “The Declared Enemy.” On opener “Being Earnest” and “Love is the Capital,” foreboding motifs brood their way back into the narrative.

Still, the album maintains a sense transformation, burdened with an alien tension– the awareness of an impending and necessary collapse. And what may come next.

Brainwaltzera debuts on FILM. The anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british IDM auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended EP for the berlin based imprint. In 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious Brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 [outtake]. The move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. Exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. Regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on FILM006 are of similarly high calibre. Varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba EP, marking it out as an excellent addition to the FILM label’s growing catalogue. "I made this track from samples of a piano board I recorded in EMS Stockholm with LAIR while we were working on our project. And some microphone hiss for the beats. I have been making purely percussive tracks recently for my upcoming album, so for this track I wanted to have an emotive melodic element as well.
