Patterns of Perception embodies experimental textures and deep atmospheric sounds, inspired by the dissonance between the natural and the industrial.

Bio:

Hysteria and Steve Duncan are members of Patterns of Perception - a Berlin-based collective that explore the hypnotic depths of techno & electronica. Through regular club nights and a podcast series, they provide a platform for artists to share their unique vision.

This contribution to the Deep Electronics podcast draws inspiration from a storm the Australian duo encountered whilst travelling through the Austrian alps some months ago.

Experiencing moments of meteorological beauty, calm, energy and bleakness amidst the rain and snow, the pair felt compelled to record their visions and emotions, resulting in this mix which was pieced together in months that followed.

With this mix I just wanted to present some music from my mates and their various labels but tie it together with some older stuff that still informs how I approach production. There's a good crew of people in, around, or connected to Manchester at the moment. Their output, as well as the many days and nights spent together within the bowels of The White Hotel have shaped this mix.  These tunes have a few elements in common, like: being a bit rude, having a kind of 'spooky' feel, being rhythmically playful whilst retaining as much forward momentum as possible.

Szare were formed during a game of darts at the Royal Oak pub in South Manchester. With the first transmission coming via a Horizontal Ground white label in 2009 under the 19.26.1.18.5 pseudonym, and have since released music under the Szare moniker through Frozen Border, Idle Hands, Field Records, Project 13, among others. Now operating out of The Peak District as the solo project of Andrew Diaczuk — with Jack Coulton retaining a seat on the security council as an occasional contributor —  the enigmatic bass-techno hybrid is gearing up to release some of it’s most ambitious and definitive works thus far, with an EP on Mumdance & Logos Different Circles imprint and two other as yet undisclosed releases lined up for 2018. Late last year saw an appearance on Tommy 47’s eponymous 47 labels most recent compilation; 47007, following up from an EP for Delsin’s off-shoot imprint Field recordings, alongside a slew of live dates and DJ shows across the EU.

Pris has been present and correct on the techno scene since 2013, initially making an impact on Resin and later releasing across tastemaking, singular labels such as Avian and Semantica. Pris’s music has always had a vulnerable quality weaved into powerful, dynamic tracks that became favourites amongst many of the vanguard of the scene and on vast, demanding sound systems. This unusual, sometimes wistful quality has evolved into an exciting new form through the medium of his new label, Empathy Corp, a striking mixed-media project founded alongside creative partner, Deejay Astral. The latest release from Pris himself, 'Sulphur City', has just hit stores. In a similar mould, and reflecting a philosophy that has evolved both emotionally and intellectually, Pris’s contribution to #PHANTASYMIX is involving, sophisticated techno that wears its heart on sleeve.

Mister Willis started his love for music enjoying the party culture between Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham and Manchester, being introduced to varied music scenes and cultures which has heavily influenced his style, keeping the dance-floor moving with mainly techno, dub techno and electro. Now living in Berlin, Mister Willis has been frequent at Suicide Club and has a regular slot on HÖR.

Comments on the mix from Oli:

"This mix was made with influence from the late 90’s-early 00’s, with a good mix of older records and some new. There are a lot of forgotten gems I dug out. I love Stef Mendesidis sound at the moment with slick rolling kick-drums, so I kinda went with this style throughout."
