There are many things that we love about the @apparel-wax releases. Firstly they always arrive with some sort of great fun gift (010 comes with a plectrum), secondly they forego the usual artist adulation to focus solely on the music. There are no divas at work here. And finally the constant renewing and re-imagining of their sound has been a joy across the series. From Vol 1 all the way through to the latest, and sadly the final chapter of Apparel Wax, it's been a constant discovery of new sounds and new musical dimensions.

Thankfully we have the brilliance of Vol 10 to bask in before they head off into the sunset. Our premier today is 010A1 and it's a throbbing slice of deep disco edged house music. Packing an incessant groove of a bassline, floor shaking percussion, hands aloft synth stabs and the coolest of cool guitar licks it's pretty much the perfect underground track. Indeed it's exactly how you would like remember an old friend who you are seeing for the last time before they head off on an endless adventure. 010A1 is vivacious, totally essential and so utterly full of life. The ever-popular Laurence Guy chalks up his fourth vinyl release on Bristol’s Shall Not Fade, sharing four tracks which span the breadth of his production skill. After a year which started with the stunning Mutual Excitement is a Wonderful Thing, and saw Guy collaborate with rising artists like Dermot Kennedy, it is a delight to see him return to the label which has become something of a home for him. 

Your Good Times Are Here EP’s title track is a reprise to the sun-soaked filter house of 2020’s ‘Your Good Times Will Come’, leaning on the club sound palette harder than its forebear and making subtle explorations into acid grooves. ‘I Know You Feel Sad’ strikes a contrast, its slowly stuttering rhythm and vocals stuck on repeat giving a sombre sense of reflection - the party vibes quickly returning for ‘Yeh Good, You?’, a pacey 303 number which pauses just enough for a distorted, breathless breakdown. Making reference to the outing on Shall Not Fade from early 2021, ‘Mutual Disappointment is a Terrible Thing’ closes the record on lingering piano melodies and eerie vocals - a delicate reflection upon its sister track.

Axe on Wax readies the second release from their sub-label PNP and as we’ve come to expect from them it’s a quality V/A stocked full of bangin’ edits. Fans of lo-fi, disco house, and deep house will all find something worthwhile here, and these will certainly be receiving club play from many of your favorite DJs.

In addition to tracks from Slamb, Turk Turkelton, Fede Lng, and gutinstinct, the PNP 002 features a track from the 18 year old German slugger DJ Swagger (soundcloud). Swagger, having previously released on Natural Sciences and E-Beamz, is in top form here, delivering an energetic track with a cheeky sample, buttery smooth chords, and a classic 909 drum workout. This isn’t ground breaking work, but compared to more “basic” lo-fi disco edits this proves to be something special. Swagger’s choice of sample was key here, and his manipulation of the female vocal is the cherry on top of an already solid record. If you’ve been following his progress as a producer, you already know that Swagger is a versatile musician; he’s released everything from lo-fi house to deep house to breaks to acid and techno, a testament to the young German’s matured musical talent. Keep an eye on this kid.

Paramida made her name as an integral part of the new Berlin school of DJs embracing a more expansive sound, a charismatic and eclectic idealism beyond the steady, straight-forward pulse of house and techno. Following five years at the city’s diverse OYE Records store, and alongside an international schedule of DJing, she has spent the previous five crafting her Love On The Rocks label in that same generous spirit.

Now, with half a decade passed, she has called upon many of the label’s previous associates, alongside some new faces, to curate a four-disc compilation produced upon the adventurous and personal principles upon which the label was founded. The title of the collection is ‘Supergau’, which Paramida explains to mean "A disaster beyond all expectations". It’s a typically pithy title for a label that’s found a unique groove between dancefloor fulfillment and surprising turns, keeping it’s dedicated buyers and open-minded DJs on their toes, just as Paramida likes it. Still, it hasn’t always been easy.

“Those 5 years didn't fly by,'' admits Paramida. “I had moments of doubts and thoughts about stopping the label. But something inside didn't let it happen. So whatever I'm doing with the label is something that is so deeply rooted in me that I'm not ready to stop yet. This compilation represents five years of ups and downs, tears and joy, growing, losing and finding itself again. I've never really questioned or reflected it much. The label has been pretty much a mirror of my personal life, my taste at a certain point and the artist or person that was involved in my life at that particular stage of my life. As such, I want to give this first chapter of Love On The Rocks a nice closure.”

Some artists on the compilation return to the fold, such including Fantastic Man, Massimiliano Pagliara, Violet, ELLES, Etbonz, Dirk Leyers and Alex Kassian. Others are featured for the first time such as Francis Inferno Orchestra, Bartellow and Eric Duncan. And others again are a complete surprise, including Kornél Kovács, Daniela La Luz and Hermann Kristoffersen. ‘5 Years of Love On The Rocks’ presents an opportunity for artists to explore the charismatic boundaries between house, disco, new wave and acid, with the shared goal of sheer dancefloor bliss.

“Every record I put out felt like a message I'm sending out into the universe”, explains Paramida. “And everyone featured on this compilation is someone I deeply connect with, even though it's a pretty unexpected mix of artists. Here’s to the next five years.”

A man of many aliases and jack of as many trades, Dominic Glynn aka Syzygy (together with Justin McKay) aka Zentik aka Fluid aka Mind Control aka Luke Warmwater resurfaces from the sunken slumber of years to re-establish his name as a much unsung artisan and key exponent of the UK electronic scene’s heyday.

Two unreleased tracks and another two enhanced re-edits compose the “Tri-Phase” EP here presented - each cut making for a snapshot of Glynn’s fast evolution as an electronic music producer, a career he was then running in parallel to his day work for the BBC including all-time TV classic series Doctor Who.

Starting with the yet unheard ‘Little Pieces of Love’, Syzygy provides us with a dynamic trancey roller that does the splits between hectic 303-riddled leads, catchy vocal hooks sheer old-school style and generously layered FXs extending the scope to further horizon-clearing soulfulness.

Drawing towards more muscular, club-ready techno linearity, ‘Luminous 4AM’ reveals an explosive combo of driving momentum, melodic richness and high-impact bass engineering, tailored to take the rave to a whole other level of consciousness. No-holds-barred floor weaponry set for tearaway peak-time ops.

Initially released on No Bones in the 90s, the other two cuts ‘And It’s Wonderful’ as Luke Warmwater and ’The Man With Three Heads’ as Fluid boast a distinct style. Whilst the first rushes us headfirst into a bumpy maelstrom of chromed techno fitted with an array of acid-drenched attributes and Chicagoan piano tropes, the latter has us zoning out to a playful reverie of trip-hop-laced, ambientoid jazz-house.
