"MEQ" is the first track from the forthcoming MOON POOL AND DEAD BAND's MEQ, a double 12" of swinging, dirty, analog techno-funk, created with mountains of old synthesizers. MEQ consists of Moon Pool and Dead Band’s earliest  track, reworked by some of Detroit’s (and ex-Detroit) best producers: Patrick Russell, BMG (Brendan M. Gillen of Ectomorph), JTC (James T. Cotton/Dabrye/Charles Manier aka Tadd Mullinix), Ice Cold Chrissy (Coyote Clean Up), Michael Dykehouse, Erno the Inferno and Nate Young in Wolf Eyes mode. MEQ plays like an album, rather than a collection of remixes. The remixers were supplied with “stems” nearly one-half hour long, leaving each with an abundance of raw material at their disposal. There are no cloying, repetitive vocal hooks to disrupt the sonic narrative. Deep, dystopian techno-funk is delivered with the unerring raw assurance that only seasoned masters could deliver, leaving the music’s rough edges appealingly unvarnished. The strong, danceable music is rugged enough to test the limits of any club sound-system, yet contains nuances, subtleties and warmth that make it ideal for home listening. Mastered by Ruud Lekx (Rude 66) and cut by Josh Bonati at Bonati Mastering in NYC. MEQ comes housed in a wide full-color UV gloss jacket featuring artwork by renowned sci-fi illustrator, Mark Salwowski. Layout by Beth Hall.

Soon after Tecuciztecatl was released we were invited to perform at the large hadron collider at CERN in Switzerland by one of the scientists, sort of an experimental-music-meets-experimental-science type thing, so I immediately began studying particle physics to get up to speed. I asked the scientist to share his notes with me, diagrams, screenshots, or anything to help me get deep into this project . Mostly he said no but then I offered him the compromise of sending him lyrics and chord charts based on my frequent misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the Standard Model and he could "fact check for bad data, misquotes, dragons, pseudoscience and make sure the witchcraft to physics ratio wouldn't be too embarrassing" for him. Realizing what he was up against he quickly agreed to send notes, papers and also recommended books, videos and answered a lot of my simplistic questions. Patterns of Light is the album that resulted from my studies and exchange of information.

The research focused on dark matter, dark energy, the search for extra dimensions, mini black holes and the machinery that last year was colliding particles at high speeds using thirteen teraelectronvolts (13 TeV aka the most electricity ever used to do anything)but also studying the fundamental forces of nature got me turning to the classics, creation myths, the visionary theology of Hildegard Von Bingen, medieval manuscripts and cosmic maps, all in my effort to turn the physics back into poetry.

An unreleased gem from the On-U archives that features on the forthcoming 'Sherwood At The Controls Volume 2: 1985 - 1990' compilation.

Brought together through the efforts of BBC Radio DJ Steve 'On The Wire' Barker, the sessions that birthed this track saw Adrian work with one of his heroes and big influences for the first time. Working alongside Style Scott and Dub Syndicate, they cooked up a fresh batch of rhythms for the Upsetter to voice, resulting in the critically acclaimed Time Boom X De Devil Dead LP which came out on On-U Sound in 1987. This alternate mix of the track "Music & Science Lovers" is heard here for the first time.
