super interesting mix! love the origin <3

Each year, we ask a few artists from the Dekmantel Selectors line-up to deliver a mix in anticipation of the new edition. Who could be a better fit than DJ Python to re-initiate this tradition?

Even before Dulce Compañia, which introduced the Python alias to the world, Brian Piñeyro has been providing a wide array of unique sounds to those who care to listen. To be fair, he makes it hard not to care, and also to describe his ambling, dembow-inspired rhythms as something other than ‘deep reggaeton’. But if Piñeyro has taught us one thing, it is that music is just moods flowing into one another. Sometimes, the mood is a percussive therapy session, and sometimes it warps drone-driven electronica, tingly synths, and steely dancehall.

It is unsurprising that this mix is all about the mood too. A 60-minute journey across genuinely emotive songs and honeyed hymns. In his words, it’s just about “enjoying the time with people around you, whatever shape the people or the time may take”. When listening to this mix, keep in mind DJ Python’s approach to making soup: you can only really do it well if you allow yourself to move beyond the recipe. The only thing left to do is let go and get locked in.

Friday morning, @jakemuir opened Hemlock Hole with an absolutely spellbinding morning ambient set. The 'Jake Fan Club' were front and center with a comfortable chair in tow. This wasn't a 4x4 dancefloor moment and those who didn't know quickly understood the magic that Jake was creating. It was a beautiful way to start the day and we are grateful for Jake's ability to generate such a special atmosphere.

A. I moved to NY in September of 2021. I had started to meet the seedlings of my now friends and budding community when I played here earlier in the summer of 2021 and before that, when I went to Sustain in 2019.

A. This mix is:

1/2 the sequel to my beloved Honcho dubstep mix from 2021
1/2 a mix of music I would have shown to my baby stoner self in high school, instead of the carefully curated Majestic Casual-ridden playlists she was dutifully crafting at the time to accompany her equally intricate apple pipes.

I used that as a metaphor for the transmission, which I envision coming from a cold stony dark-gray world distant from the sun. I conceived of the idea for this mix while on the inaugural SEED (상록수 Education and Exposure Delegation) trip, in Seoul, Korea, this year, where I traveled for 20 days with 6 other queer korean cascadians. The trip was transformative, not only in my own relationship to the political and social history and present of the Korean peninsula, but also in my understanding of what it means to be a Korean person, whether in the diaspora or not. I'm not very skilled at DJing (yet), but I knew that I could only express some of the experiences I had through the medium of mixtape. So, this mix is a sonic representation of what it felt like to hold awe, excitement, joy, and 정, at the same time as deep grief, rage, and 한, and it's dedicated to Noory Kim.
