Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Alex Nicole’s upbringing in the black church left little room for them to explore their blossoming queerness. Drowning themselves in the work of Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R, and queer artists like Kehlani and Janelle Monáe, they’ve been able to craft their own lyrical and sonic identity, pulling on their sonic love for pop, r&b, and their roots in gospel music. Their work is a seamless blend of harmonic richness, catchy melodies, and the complex, messy lifestyle that comes with coming into your queerness after repressing not only your full creative potential, but your authentic self. They’re a testament to the importance of living your truth regardless of the social confines you were conditioned to fit into, embracing using the gifts you were given to share your story with whoever is listening, and to making yourself loud enough so that even those that don’t want to listen will hear you anyway.
