SBZ : La Funk EP 
 
Under the watchful eye of label head honcho BRK, French based drum & bass imprint Hyperactivity Music has been making itself felt throughout the entirety of drum & bass. BRK’s extensive knowledge of the genre can be seen through his A&R skill, which is stretched across the labels roster, with its roots deeply entrenched within European bass culture. Having been everywhere from playing stages at Outlook Festival, to being on the airwaves of Rinse FM, he’s been offered plenty of platforms to detonate the most cutting sounds paved throughout Hyperactivity’s back catalogue.

And that’s why the forthcoming release from SBZ has already garnered such interest. Already making his debut as both a beatmaker and rapper, his first EP ‘Dawn Reflections’ was met with critical acclaim, after being released through Hyperactivity Music. With such a range of influences, from hip hop, soul and jazz to techno, he’s engineered a sound which is inherently his. SBZ’s punctuated, melodic pieces have been scattered across some of the most memorable sets in recent years and no doubt his forthcoming EP on Hyperactivity Music will be no different.

‘Don’t Stop’ is a careful composition of moody percussion, padded notes and a slow rhythm which guides you into its eventual breakdown. It’s a smooth mixture of light and dark, one which gradually pulls you in as you’re left to float alongside its relentless scuttles. ‘A Lesson Learned’ is a winding musical number which effortlessly captures your senses, taking you down a deep rabbit hole of twisting bass sounds, conjuring images of the summer and late night festival sets. Then up next is ‘La Funk’, paying homage to the EP’s title and leaving a lasting impression. It does exactly what you’d expect from a track named after one of the key drum & bass elements. Slightly nastier in its demeanour, it points to the foretold versatility of SBZ, proving that he’s still a force to be reckoned with despite his perfectly strung compositions. Every track helps to build a package which exemplifies SZB as an artist; with the guidance of BRK he’s looking to make his biggest career steps yet.
