Sheffield-based electro genius, Mean-E, provides us with yet another banging electro mix to add to the series. The don from the Steel City takes us through his eclectic taste for all things zappy and powerful - this one is not for the faint-hearted!

Joel Meaney’s productions under his alias Mean-E have been nothing short of sensational. With releases on massive platforms such as Asquith’s legendary Lobster Theremin label, Russia’s CyberJit, and a forthcoming with French posse JERRY HORNY alongside Tayside’s YTP, its safe to say we feel privileged to have such a talented artist on our mix series. 

Joel’s music journey began by raking through his parents’ hardcore vinyl collection - ranging from old school rave, jungle and gabber from back in time. Joel then began to produce music on a pirated software when he was 13, allowing him to release his first tune with CyberJit whilst in hospital with a broken knee (legend).

He has been progressing rapidly as a producer with some colossal releases on some major labels including CYBERJIT, Lobster Theremin and more recently Jerry Horny. Not to mention high quality tracks release occasionally on his personal soundcloud.

The mix he has put together for us is an hour of high energy rhythms. Very electro based and with excellent mixing!

New Wave Podcast 022: Mean-E

To put it simply Mean-E is an artist who conforms to no agenda and works within no boundaries. Although he explores many different genres; including footwork, jungle, old school rave and electro, there is one constant and that is the speed. His energetic and boisterous  personality certainly translates to his music and every time he is in the studio or behind the decks he does not hold back. 

Coming from a family who were regulars in the early days or rave, he was fortunate to be exposed to these sounds at such a young age. Their love for old school breakbeat and rave was very easy to force upon Joel, who took a liking to these sounds early on. Although when first clubbing he was heavily indulged into the lofi scene, he slowly found his way to more faster, upbeat sounds. His early production was very electro orientated, which got him releases on several respected labels such as Cyberjit and Lobster Theremin. However over the past year he has been experimenting with more breakbeat focused tracks. Mean-E has shown an appreciation to its long history and offshoots like none other, exploring and taking inspiration from a number of eras with the utmost respect and translating this into his own music.

We recently caught up with Mean-E to discuss lockdown shifts, the influence of his parents, his fast-paced energetic style, his love for the Sheffield scene and future releases.
