Taken from Ursula Sereghy's debut album 'OK Box' (G&P019), out September 2021

With a background in playing jazz and formative years of playing saxophone in a live band, Prague-based Ursula Sereghy stepped out of the hustle in order to focus, all while becoming a regular at the local Synth Library. A space where she found support of the musically and politically like-minded, and could nourish her newfound passion for experimenting with machines and exploring the limitless possibilities of sound design. An extensive period of voluntary detachment from  everyday life during the pandemic gave rise to the stunningly confident debut album 'OK Box' fabricated by this dark horse of a producer.

“From the rubble of our incognito territories, Martirio collective invites its virtual accomplices to imagine strategies to inhabit the collapse, collapse and destruction. In accordance with the current apocalyptic scenario, each of the tracks in this compiled one composes an electric and fiery scenario in which the anguish and nostalgia experienced during the confinement are manifested from different fronts. Terminal Lucidity, like that moment in which bodies can feel injections of vital energy before death, aims to be the soundtrack of that episode where we have nothing left but to dance and scream on top of the ashes ”.

20 tracks inspired by the concept of natural disaster. A manifesto of everything Martirio means: songs for the club, to cry, chaotic and loud, that reinterpret pop hymns with distorted voices and speak about our Latin queer origin.

Growing up in the Dominican Republic, it always seemed strange to me the music we made over there. Rock bands that sounded like Oasis. Techno that wanted to sound European. I admit it, I was fucking heavily with the latter at a certain time of my life. Techno and/or electronic music is my base.

But at some point I wanted to find a sound of my own. I want to clarify that I really didn’t fuck with reggaetón when I was younger. I just consumed a lot of foreign media, because I grew up in an environment where we glorified everything that was imported. I barely listened to music in Spanish (at least consciously).

My friend Sergio ( @oz.aiff ) introduced me to Playero and the Dominican urban sound when I was 19 and it made sense to me. It was a movement and a culture, an amalgamation of African and western influences, very much a Caribbean ethos. But to say I grew up loving reggaetón would be dishonest.

When I started experimenting with the sounds of perreo, I just did it because it made sense to me. It was a sound that was at arm’s reach. For some reason I navigated the language, I understood the codes and the symbols, maybe because it’s so similar to hip hop and because it just thrived in the language and idiosyncrasies that I grew up around.

But I just wanted to make something that sounded like me, something that only I could make. With this mix I am taking this schism further and I just want to say that I make electronic music…and it so happens I’ll just put the sounds that are near to my taste to make something that is authentic for me.

In this mix I decontextualize various reggaetón samples and loops, to create more of an ambient trip, a more personal and reflective experience, made to be listened to, rather than danced. It also intertwines with sounds that are neighboring to the genre, such as reggae and dub. The obvious clichés that are part of the style, are pushed to the background and it's distinctive gestures seem to only echo to the forefront, a faint breath of what it used to be.



I think I don’t represent anything in particular. Maybe I represent an attitude: that action is the ultimate representation of identity, not theorizing. And at the end, isn’t identity a  paradox? We pick certain things  around us that make us unique but in turn those things come from a group of limited options that are determined by our environment and culture. We are the result of those small choices, of that little spark of consciousness.  

Ultimately, can we really call reggaetón the current iteration of the sound? It’s bigger than that. It’s the new global sound of pop music. It’s trascended. Tainy is Pharrell. Thanks to all the artists who are going down this same path, trying to redefine what electronic music is for a Latin/Caribbean/African/diasporic person, trying to make sense of who we are by our own narratives and not the ones we are sold.
