The dust was a constant companion, a fine, gritty powder that clung to everything - his worn boots, his threadbare clothes, even the inside of his lungs. Each step was a laborious act, the ground beneath his feet a fractured mosaic of concrete and rusted metal. He walked, not with purpose, but with a grim persistence born of the need to keep moving, to keep the wasteland from swallowing him whole. Above, the sky was a perpetual bruise, a canvas of grey and faded orange where the sun hid its face in shame. The air, thick with the metallic tang of decay and the acrid scent of long-dead fires, tasted like a memory he couldn't quite place, a phantom flavor of a life lived before the catastrophe. He was a solitary figure in this desolate theatre, a silent player in a tragedy that had consumed the world and left him, seemingly, the last echo of humanity…
