Barcelona’s producer Omega dB (Adrián Gázquez) – whose credo is “Life is ephemeral but music is eternal” – releases his mini album Utopian Reality this week via the Spanish imprint Sofa Tunes, heavily invested in quality music and visuals.

Four original tracks together with two remixes by the fellow Spanish producers Brunetto and Skygaze result in a communal experimental EP, with influences from dub, techno, left-field, and melodic nostalgia.

Listen to the dubby take on “Perpetual”, re-imagined by Brunetto as avant-garde chamber music.

Utopian Reality is due on 11th of November via Sofa Tunes.

Following his fractious grime debut via yours truly, the Bristol-based Aphix (not to be confused with AFX, the ubiquitous braindance harbinger of auld) claps back with sophomore EP “Chemtrails”, a three-track diversification of his already-versatile palette.

Opener “50/Thrifty” is a nocturnal, languorous traipse through timelapsed urban environs, night life flashing by the listener, who moves as if submerged. Broken beat and dub take precedence here, with Aphix’s grime signatures present only in the hollow, distant ostinato and square wave bass. A haunting snippet of female spoken word interjects every so often. Sounding like (if one may) Bicep leaving their comfort zone and doing something for Keysound, it’s nevertheless completely within our boy’s comfort zone, and a hypnotic, subversive ohrwurm at that. Follower “Wester to Gold” continues down this path, albeit shifting gears into fully eerie territory.

Title track and closer “Chemtrails”, for lack of a more apt comparison, channels heyday Ramadanman via its quizzical, ever-tentative call-and-response beat and wistful melodic overlays. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to categorize… or to even deconstruct, really. With everything so perfectly intertwined, it moves as a single congruous entity, amorous and seductive, lulling the listener into a genuine sense of security and well-earned respite. Quite unlike what chemtrails are purported to do.

Opening things up, the sinister title track is a dense, winding affair built around staggered tribal patters and powered along with a brooding Reese bassline. He/aT 's “set openers” have become something he is known for and this is definitely one of his most dramatic...

“It's Impossible To Describe The Smell Of A Wet Dog” strips things right down with subtly chaotic-timed rhythms and synth-work. Kind of minimal...but not.

On the flip side, “A Drama Out Of A Crisis” is a straight-up new-meets-old techno stomper with early Beltram-esq beats and modulated melodies, before the EP closes out with the rawness; “The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous” is a tough acidic kind of work out with an infectious hook we think you're going to like.

Inaugurating a new project of his, the aptly-named label Midnight Themes, @marlonhoffstadt establishes his territory somewhere between upper meditative spheres and full-on pragmatic body music. Our premiere, 'Mutual Desire', is a well-rounded slab of chimey house rife with acidic flares, cottony pads and a driving, bouncy drum work to emphasize its breezy swing with further 4/4 impact. Brittle and crystalline, yet bendy as can be when the bass drops, this one's geared towards nightly bohemians on the lookout for a safe dreamy haven. Score.
