25 - Zilal is BULK by Lasse Buhl

Baudelaires poetries remain one of the most influential centrepieces in my book collection and they are maybe my most re-read volume of poems. Like all great poets he was an acute observer and an ingenious translator of feelings. His words paint precise and poignant pictures of the shapeless and inenarrable, like a mood or a sentiment. Sometimes only music can have the same effect on me. However, the fascination and the bloom of „Les Fleurs du Mal“ goes beyond that. Baudelaire's observations, could be considered overall as „negative“, for example as pessimistic - like the unfulfilled human pursuit of integrity -, or as repulsive - like the tristesse of urban hedonism. Induced by the linguistic beauty the emotional experiencing of the seemingly „negative“ or „evil“ - which in some places of the book can be kind of an explicit sense of self - transforms into a bittersweet atmosphere that holds grace and grandeur. Here I see a strong commonality with some music I love and I feel there is a similar approach entire music genres might have pursued: Maybe more than other art forms, music is sometimes met with refusal, confusion and lack of understanding when things become aestheticised, that are distasteful, obnoxious, cruel or - to stay with Baudelaire - „evil“. But behind all this stands a reality, the musician as an acute observer is witness to. Ars longa, vita brevis.

This mix, rather a sound collage, is meant to sonically illustrate the pictures Baudelaire put in my mind; sometimes a direct reflection of the texts, sometimes a associative pairing to the feelings Baudelaire's words elicit. Romanian electro agent Andrew Red Hand has been spotted delivering the heat to respected outposts like M>O>S, Detroit Underground and Chiwax, and now he's setting off with Rotterdam Electronix for a night drive through future cityscapes. It's electro through and through, driven by snappy 808 beats and analogue monosynths, but there's something particularly charming about the minimal wave quality to Red Hand's sound. That contrasts with The Exaltics, who delivers a gutsy re-version of 'In The Cemetery' which will keep you up at night for all the right reasons.

Bytes readies reissue of the killer 1990s electro EPs by SEM aka Damon Baxter.

Earlier this month Bytes announced the reissue of the killer 1990s electro EPs by SEM (aka Damon Baxter, who would go on to record as Deadly Avenger) on May 17, 2024. The second track to be made available for public consumption is Area 5, taken from The Demon EP, the second SEM release, on which Damon expanded the pure old-school electro SEM sound to include elements of Detroit techno and dystopian sci-fi strings, giving off serious John Carpenter/Vangelis’s Blade Runner soundtrack vibes.

Poladroïd, originating from Belgium, the featured producer is renowned for blending electro and IDM with a fierce energy, notably showcased on labels like Science Cult and his own Roulette Rekordz. However, Poladoïd offers a departure from his usual style with this release, which feels like a spiritual successor to his previous work "Eurosiberie" on Detriti.

Drenched in dense, filtered atmospheres and infused with nostalgic echoes of a bygone era, 'Danse Macabre' exudes a dark and gritty ambiance, straddling the realms of retro-futurism and melancholic machine melodies. NAGA returns for its second offering: Immortal Mirth by Seattle-based multidisciplinary artist enereph. The 5 original works on the release were formed out of her deep contemplation of concepts ranging from Chinese cultural symbology to physical materials and the weight of navigating the human world we’ve found ourselves in.

She brings these themes into the sonic realm by weaving together influences of ambient music, Chicago footwork, the UK hardcore continuum and beyond - never failing to place her own unique imprint on each piece. enereph’s talent for orchestrating a plethora of machines is on full display, with a number of tracks birthed out of her astounding live PA sets.

The curtains open with the escalating tension of “Talisman”, a twisting soundscape of glass, metal & otherworldly sound design permeated by guttural bass drones. A mesmerizing prelude for things to come.

“Carved Nephrite” moves into faster territory, building energy with clubby kicks, cinematic bass stabs and an ear-catching arp. enereph’s knack for arrangement manifests as the track deconstructs itself midway and rebuilds into a cavernous apex.

“Cold Family” keeps the pace up with a mechanistic take on the footwork and jungle sound. The track quickly morphs through a staggering onrush of breaks, bleeps and alien sound design suited to hypnotize dancefloors at peak hours.

The fourth track moves into more atmospheric territory with splintered drums and swells of sub bass wrapped in bending chords. “Insolubility” evokes visions of a fogged-out 90s warehouse rave, dripping in futurism despite its nods to the past.

The last original track in the EP is a weightless ambient piece entitled “Numbers Fall From Stars”. Echoic synth plucks take the foreground & unfold a story through subtle moments of harmony and dissonance.

Rounding things off is a remarkable remix of “Cold Family” by Looting, a seasoned producer of shapeshifting club & ambient music and a core member of the vibrant underground community in the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories of BC.

CMD is a Montreal DJ and producer whose live performances and DJ sets reveal a veteran talent for creating aesthetic links between various styles. 
Her commitment to finding and sharing new music is reflected in her radio show modular systems on CKUT 90.3 FM and her guest mixes for various podcasts. 
She has released music on labels such as Jacktone, Fur Trade, and Low Noise Productions, and performed live at events in Montreal and beyond, both as a headliner and in support of international artists. Her newest EP, Wild Light, was released in April by San-Francisco-based label Perfect Location.
