Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a submarine filled with bass-heavy torpedos to Amen-Break the monotony of your isolated Thursday? Kind of: it's our man @novacheq from across the channel once again blessing us with an amazing tune to premiere. "Detached" is a fantastically melancholic banger filled with precisely chopped breaks and a sub to take your low end to the higher ground. The choon will appear on his forthcoming EP "Staying Alive" via Leeds-based @gimmeabreakrecords. This magical 3-tracker will definitely establish Nova Cheq even further as one of the few producers on our radar with the power to fuse pace, breaks and bass into something that feels truly unique and emotional (while still banging, of course).

Building from the success of their first release - The Moon Rack Compilation, an album compiling a variety of diverse creative influences, with a central theme of fusing genres and exploring contrasting moods - the Bristol-based Moon Rack is back with its first EP courtesy of Leeds-based producer, OSH. 

Featuring four experimental productions Moon Rack have struck gold in OSH's 'Northern Lights' EP. Through a fusion of twisted percussive elements, ambient synths, exceptional vocal sampling and ferocious breaks, OSH has developed a highly unique production style which, in turn, provides one of the most exciting and ambitious releases we've heard in a while.

We close 2021 with their annual Scuffed Presents compilation, presenting four new artists to look ahead to in 2022.

The release kicks off with Moscow producer @rnbwssound, who has been building a name for himself with recent appearances on labels like Nehza, Kouncil Cuts, and Cyberjit. ‘Till I Get Enough’ is a pounding, breaks-led track based around an addictive vocal, acting as a statement of intent for the rest of the compilation.

Up next is London-based newcomer Gesture (@kresc) – whose first ever track ‘Skynet’ is a barrage of lurching bass, glitched-out vocals, and erratic breaks.

The third track on the compilation comes from Edinburgh-based @feena112, who has broken into the city’s club scene as a resident of the city’s Miss World collective, and honed her production skills as part of the Scuffed artist development scheme throughout 2021. ‘Dead Digits’ sees Feena combining eerie pads and a powerful Reese with elements of dubstep, breaks and garage.

Closing out the release is @rumu, who debuted on Dusky’s 17 Steps label in 2020 and has since seen across-the-board support on BBC Radio 1, NTS, Rinse and Balamii. He joins the Scuffed camp with ‘Splinter’, a frantic electro-inspired stinger.

Klaus Veen - House Of The Prayer

Following up on the success of their inaugural release, Out of Sorts present the first of their new club-focused digital series, OOSX. MELD boss Mod-R sets the tone for the series with Jury: four tracks carefully selected with dark rooms and big sound systems in mind. The release spans a range of percussive, breaks-fuelled workouts that vary in tempo but are aligned by a distinctive UK feel that runs through the DNA of each track. From the classic samples used in Capacitive and Long Way from London that nod to the hazy days of warehouse raves; to the chopped-up breaks and weighty bass compositions of Jury and Mandate that make for a real heads down affair. 
Wrapping up the release is Maya Q on remix duties, who flips the title track with a refined, UK funky laced twist, chopping up the melody to provide a change of style and pace on the release. The five track release is due out 7th January 2022 and will be available on our bandcamp and through streaming and digital download platforms.

Austrian producer @awo_ojiji brings his Mantecatura EP to Scuffed, featuring four new intricately-crafted, bass-heavy cuts.

From the mid-tempo opener ‘Recess’, to the footwork-influenced ‘Stress’, bassweight-focussed ‘Balsam’ and percussive dancehall-techno hybrid ‘Inwards’, Awo Ojiji displays a unique slant across the course of the EP with tracks that are at once club and headphone ready.

Awo Ojiji - Recess

Compliments is a non-binary dance music producer from Huddersfield, based in London. Their work is heavily influenced by the percussive UK styles of jungle, garage and bassline, with a pinch of nü-metal’s distortion and adolescent energy thrown in for good measure.

Tomgirl, their newest release on Mantissa, showcases these stylistic influences across four tracks that move between wonky 4/4 techno, amen-heavy jungle, spacey 140 and swampy chugging house, playing with the idea of floating somewhere between masculinity and femininity, hard and soft.

After experimenting with samples of their own voice on their debut album ‘The place where my voice should be’ (self-released in March 2022), the EP builds on this technique to create eerie atmospherics and strange rhythms in a more club-focused and dance floor orientated zone.

Tomgirl is topped off with a remix by Bristol’s Bex, channeling a potent strain of bassy, stepping techno that her productions and DJ sets have become famous for.

The 13th release on Desert Hearts Records is appropriately our most sinister EP to date and comes from up & coming LA based "weirdo house" producer, Fritz Carlton.

The first track on the EP is titled 'Doses' comes from Fritz and fellow LA based producer, Lubelski. Featuring sinister lyrics from rapper Daemon, this hip-house party anthem is so facetiously over the top it reminds us of the devil on your shoulder when you're partying at 5 in the morning. Let's be real here, we all like to get silly on the dance floor, so why do we pretend like it's not happening? Why can't we talk about these things? With a downright evil bassline and off beat snare drum patterns to accompany the lyrics, 'Doses' is sure to ruffle some feathers and murder dance floors across the world.

The title track 'T.M.K.N.' wraps up the whole vibe of the release as a grueling bassline is paired with a sinister pitched down vocal proudly announcing "That's My Kinda Night". With snare drums and tweaked out wobbles galore, we think you get to know Frtiz Carlton pretty well by the end of the EP. We think this debauchery loving weirdo is going to fit in very nicely at Desert Hearts Records.
