Secret Lover Between You And Me Ep HTH006 Preview

One of our favourite labels, Local Talk, are putting out a 12" from the "Telephone Man" himself, Terrence Parker. One of the second wave Detroit pioneers alongside Carl Craig and Jeff Mills, but on the house side of things rather than techno, his moniker derives from the fact that he uses a telephone handset instead of headphones when DJing.

In the past TP has released on labels such as Nervous, Defected, Planet E Communications and his own Intangible Records. His new 12" sticks to his classic sound, and we're very happy to be premiering one of the tracks. 'Unconditional' takes its name from the arresting vocal sample which weaves its way through keyboard stabs and funky synth blips.  Perfectly encapsulates that smoky Detroit skyline.

London label @hollick_nobaddays launch an edits offshoot, linking up with @m-zaika, a Poland producer who inaugurated the label last year under his former Selvy alias.  Sampling a little known New Age cassette, 'Cave' harks back to the 1980s, with nods to italo laced with video game flavours.

Watching Me is the second Funky Espresso production on Smooth Operators. This house track has a Mediterranean vibe, crafted for summer dancefloors. Produced in Berlin, mixed and mastered in New York, remixed in Buenos Aires, it captures the groove from around the globe.

The track was born when Funky Espresso was jamming in their studio with Argentinian singer Priscilla Omil, looking to create a track that embodied the feeling of long lasting dances by the beach on summer nights. Paul Griesbach on his legendary sax and Paul Rowley on his guitar joined in and gave “Watching Me” an additional Balearic flair. The track was sent to Brooklyn-based producer Federico Chiesa (OORA), who fell in love with the vibes and decided to mix and master it adding some dancefloor presence to the soulful track.

Upon receiving the track back in Berlin, Funky Espresso sent it out and started receiving amazing feedback. Bill Brewster, London-based legendary DJ, was taken by the track and suggested that they reach out to Buenos Aires-based producer, bass player of 2020 Soundsystem, Fernando Pulichino to work on a remix. After a quick exchange, Fernando had the great idea to take the track in a more raw and funkier direction.

Together with the broken beat remix from Berlin-based Andrew Ashdown (Bridge Guy) and the acapella version celebrating Priscilla’s beautiful vocals, this release is the total package for summer playlists.

Funky Espresso is Marco Esposito and Aziz Hashmi. Their first release “Born for the Night” came out on Smooth Operators (SMOOP-002) on November 17, 2017.

Felix Leifur has seriously been putting in some hours in the studio. His new EP titled Hamburg 3011 will be released on the mighty Dirt Crew Recordings, available on wax on 26th October and digitally on the 29th. The EP in true Felix style is house music influenced by jazz and hip hop. We have the pleasure of presenting the premiere of the opening track, which gives a great introduction to the EP.

The infectiously hazy first track of the Icelandic man’s newest EP is titled Between Us. The piece starts out with a spacey layering of tribal drums, which are looped to create an infectious rhythm. A hypnotic vocal floats into the mix to keep the tension spiralling, before a deep kick drum drops in and brings some order. A deep sustained almost disharmonic chord rings out to solidify a darker tone in the track, which is complimented by a groovy yet simple bass line at 1 minute 20 seconds.

The energy of the track swirls around in true Felix Leifur style, although this feels slightly different to his previous work, it feels more experimental, as if he is pushing the boundaries just a touch further. An open hat rings through the mix to get this track swinging and a distant jazz trumpet sings melodies in the distance, before hitching a ride from the outskirts to arrive at the forefront of the mix. The filter of a synth roars open to provide some grit, some dirt, and supplies some more emotion.

The eclectic feel of this EP is very powerful, and one to definitely check out.

Nomadic producer Zen in Space releases LP Earth Tones, following two consecutively sold-out 12” releases on Moonshoe [MSH003] and Post Pluto [PPC001].

The warm & lush textures of Earth Tones were produced over 2 years with inspiration taken across Australia’s vast & captivating landscape. Here, we hear an array of sounds from ambient to downtempo, as well as experimental electronic. Earth Tones features various live instrumentation, analogue synthesis, drum machines and exotic rainforest, outback & wilderness field recordings; captured throughout Australia’s rich landscapes.

Zen took big inspiration from artists such as Four Tet, Boards of Canada, Floating Points, and J Dilla in creation of this project. Earth Tones aims to encapsulate the intense beauty of natural earth in all its shapes and forms, and the value we must give to its diverse landscapes & life. 

Earth Tones hopes to bring attention to the value & significance in preserving & respecting natural ecosystems & their deeply delicate & ancient systems.
