With their new single “Chrome”, the two French producers midnight alpha. and nogems, transposes the listener into a serene atmosphere, a sweet escapade from dark to light that could be compared to a spring sunrise. Which is illustrated by colorful chords, nuanced harmonies and vivid percussion. Combining multiple genres such as neo-soul, jazz, hip hop and electronic music, the single reflects an impressive sense of detail that stems from the obsession of both artists to forge their tracks as sensitive experiences, to create a moment out of time.

RITCHRD is the main alias of Chuck Cutlass, a twenty-something(?) producer from near San Francisco. That one sentence pretty much covers all of the concrete, biography style information we have on the producer – with any other ‘facts’ about him pretty much falling into the realm of conjecture, hearsay or just plain lies. This muddled state of affairs you feel is exactly how Cutlass likes it – if his faceless press shot above and this deranged ramble of an interview are anything to go by. Behind this artfully constructed air of enigma lies a bursting arsenal of beats that make his impenetrable non-persona worthwhile, with Cutlass’ music straddling a rich and unexpected network of influences via a Hip-Hop framework – a style that frequently brings up allusions to Madlib. Cutlass goes beyond being a fanboy sound-alike though, and instead embraces his fellow Californian’s ‘sample everything’ approach and scuzzy attitude to production values to generate Lo-Fi mini-masterworks of Soul, mood and rhythm.

Long time fans of the consistently bizarre and brilliant output on his Soundcloud account, we saw the release of his cassette/download collection ‘TAPE4′ at the top of the summer as the perfect cue to get Cutlass to unload a Hyp Mix on us. Here across forty or so minutes we’re welcomed into a universe where knackered and warped versions of Disco grooves hum beneath the distorted warblings of Justin Timberlake, classic Michael Jackson samples are reimagined as blue-eyed hymns and dreamy Pop floats into an ether of tape hiss…
