Melbourne based artist Dashiell debuts on Felt Sense Records with five hazy cuts, including a remix from Salt Mines co-founder Rudolf C.

Dashiell is a Melbourne born and raised DJ & Producer and a member of production group Menage alongside Sam Brickel, who released a track on Kia's Animalia imprint back in June 2020. Dashiell is a devotee to glitch & minimal musical styles, which shine through in his 'Going Nowhere Fast' EP on Melbourne label Felt Sense Records. The EP features a collection of tracks recorded over several years in some of Dash's ever-evolving bootleg studio setups like laundry spaces, and leaky tin sheds. The EP opener 'Aspect' sees Dashiell invite Steeplejack artist Sam Brickell to feature. The track offers fluttering grooves, hypnotic pads and spacey, humming low frequencies before 'Going Nowhere Fast' lays down breaky rhythms, tripped-out fx and twinkling synths underneath. Up next, 'Oxy' takes things into minimal territories as the shimmering bassline fuse delicately with moody textures and dubbed-out vibrations whilst 'Scratching The Surface' features ambient atmospheres, breezy soundscapes and glistening melodies.

To finish, Berlin-based Australian producer and Co-Founder of the Salt Mines label rolls out a loopy remix of 'Going Nowhere Fast' as he blends trippy electronics and murky tonality.

On this occasion Soos and NetterSystem deliver us a five song EP full of mist and 90s vibes. From the beginning this work takes us back to a party set decades ago in which breakbeat, techno and the jungle converge generating a series of sensations that are extrapolated. Digital and analog elements are mixed in the same timeline that in the end they reach the same conclusion: move the body.

As the tracks progress, the haze and white noise fill the imaginary space of our mind. Elements of bands like Spiritualized and many vocal samples fill the atmosphere throughout the tracks creating a well-being and at the same time an explosion of energy that causes you to move your body.
On the other hand, it is worth noting the maturity and the way in which sounds are handled in this work. In some parts it feels like being in the lobby of a European hotel: melancholic sounds that take time to mature in a very short amount of time. It's super enriching to hear layers and layers of sound that fall perfectly into place. In some parts the same melancholy takes us back to that time when the city of Leeds and Nightmares on Wax dominated the slopes. On the other hand, Latin America feels very present in the core of this EP.
Without a doubt, a work full of surprises and sounds that are not easily found.

This record is a momentous occasion for me as it is the first release that I have signed from a member of my production tutorial website. This is something I was quietly hoping would come to pass when I started the project but I never knew if it would actually happen. Liebus was sending me tracks to critique as part of a feature on the site and after a batch of them came in that I not only didn’t have any critique for but actually I wanted to ask him how he made them instead, I knew I was onto a winner. I can’t quite believe this is his first release as the tracks sound so mature and incredibly produced but I was never going to think twice about putting them out.

All five tracks are subby, drummy, mind bending workouts from start to finish. Proper cavernous vibes with a dose of potentially too strong an LSD trip mixed in for good measure.  

Not for the faint hearted…

OK enough of my blather. Go and listen to the damn things yourself and decide if you like them, rather than trying to work it out from reading a bloody press release you weirdos. 

All four tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. They want big sound systems and dark rooms.

Following a debut EP release on Brazilian record label Yellow Island Records and a hypno-house debut album on colourful L.A imprint 100% Silk, California producer Etari readies four air-fresh cuts of club melodia designed for those deep moments in the dance on Running Out Of Steam.

Aesthetics of both artist and label are a heaven-made match; favouring melodic grooves and broken-beats that trigger blissed-out experiences both spiritual and physical. ‘Chemistry’ makes use of broken Baltimore rhythms and blends them with warped, supernatural vocals, feeding into both worlds of melancholy and paradise. 

‘Cinnamon Spice’ maintains the tempo with a fairy-light cut of footwork-electro – a sequence that begs to be lost in, angelic strobes of light beaming onto a looping trip cinematic sound – before the lo-fi house rhythms of ‘Lavender Luv’ cast our minds back to a simpler time when the sun was setting and the sand was still warm between our toes. 

‘Sweet Pea’ completes the release with a wubby piece of blissful Balearic; no sudden movements, swaying in the turquoise vibe as teardrops roll into the ocean.

Skins continues forging his own path with a new label celebrating the uplifting and futuristic sounds of jungle, with a four-tracker featuring tracks with early support from DJs at the leading edge of the new wave of jungle such as Tañ, Mixtress and Frazer Ray through to revered names like Paul Rhodes of 2 Bad Mice.

Whilst some will know Skins from his run of self-released white label techno EPs or 2021’s underground hit 24 Hour Dub, more recently he has turned his attention back to the music which made him fall in love with it all in the first place:

“I vividly remember the effect that the futuristic sounds of 90s jungle and drum ‘n’ bass had on me as a kid, hearing snippets of tracks in video games and later stumbling across artists like Alaska, Future Engineers, Seba, Peshay and LTJ Bukem. After years engrossing myself in the cavernous spaces of dub techno, this record feels like a return to my roots, bringing my style into a new arena which still feels like home. The label will serve as an outlet for this and future collaborations with like-minded producers.”

Route R is the second track from the forthcoming inaugural release on Skins’ new project Sauce Direct Records. The label is set to draw from the sounds and energy of classic jungle, with an emphasis on colour, excitement and most importantly, fun.

The track opens with a pulsing, sparse and echo-laden drum pattern, which slowly fills out and is joined by an arpeggiated synth line pulling us along to the breakbeat section. From here we travel deeper, driven forwards by a powerful undulating bassline, until we are greeted by uplifting pads and layers of rich, emotionally charged harmonies.

After a brief moment lost in space, we are plunged back into the bass and breakbeat groove for a few more minutes of heads-down action, before a familiar synthesiser line brings us back home, from which we set off, but somehow different…

I first came across Hunter as a member of my production tutorial website a couple of years back. He sent me across these demos and I was totally blown away with them. I loved the feel, the vibe and the weight across all five.

They vary in many ways and traverse the spectrum of underground club music but they all hit hard and are underpinned with some serious bass weight.

Expect to get down hard and jump up high. It’s a rollercoaster for sure.

In recent years the boundaries of bass heavy UK club music have been blurred beyond recognition, allowing producers to repel any of the redundant tags they are assigned. Cross pollination of sounds from a range of geographical club scenes is now the norm, with a new wave of producers merging the global sounds they take in on the internet with those they hear in the club. At the forefront of this hybrid breed of club music is young Kent based producer Wen, who’s seemingly effortless blends of Dubstep, Grime and Techno have earned him the deserved praise of Oneman, Youngsta and Benji B, as well as being championed by revered underground institutions like Rinse FM and FWD.

Fresh from the collection of beautifully mutated, heavy cuts on last year’s ‘Signals’ LP from Keysounds, the rising artist has just unleashed his first EP for Pinch’s Bristol Bass imprint Tectonic. ‘Finesse’ was released earlier this month and further demonstrates Wen’s ability to blend his trademark grime vocal cuts atop bellowing subs and tribal percussion. His attention to the finer details whilst still allowing tracks to unapologetically punch you in the face explain why he’s gained so much respect within the UK underground.

For this week’s Hyp mix, Wen treats us to over 40 minutes of dark, cutting edge bangers that show off his abilites as a confident selector of eclectic sounds. The haunting melodic chaos of ‘Black Sun’ from Turkish bass producers Gantz & El Mahdy Jr merges seamlessly into the dancing synth melodies and classic grime vocal chops of  Wen’s own ‘She Giv’. We’re later treated to an evil sounding Pinch & Mumdance cut that features Riko Dan from their forthcoming EP for Tectonic, as well as an enchanting new piece from Dark0 that can only be described as a cosmic lullaby from the future.
