i remember a day. i must have been seven. the sun was so warm on the skin of my arms. i was in the garden, digging for treasure with a blue plastic shovel. i wasn't digging for anything specific. just digging. the earth was cool and smelled like rain. my mother called from the kitchen window, her voice weaving through the leaves of the apple tree. i remember the smell of fresh bread from the bakery down the street, a warm, yeasty promise of something good. for that whole afternoon, there was no future. there was no past. there was only the hole in the ground, the blue shovel, and the sun. i was so perfectly, completely, happy. i didn't know it then. but... i know it now! i know it now!!!!
