Welcome to my first podcast for Radio Alhara! In my new series "Centers of Resonace" I would like to take you on a journey into the genre of field recording. Music, soundscapes, everyday noises. Recorded with simple and portable technical equipment, the following recordings were often made spontaneously in the open air. Music & sounds resonate in the open space. Unintentionally and yet desirably, sounds of the surroundings, the time of day and various creatures join in... Have fun on this sound journey!

Besides some of my own recordings from Sao Tomé, Ghana & India, you will also hear recordings from the global field recording community. Especially from the wonderful labels Sahel Sounds, Sublime Frequencies and Honest Jon's records. If this show has whetted your appetite, I highly recommend you to keep following these labels!

his week’s mix comes from Balamii resident, Coop Audio affiliate and Free Range founder Donwella. Informed by her time living in South Africa and London, Donwella’s eclectic sonic palette has been blowing us away each and every month on her regular self-titled show on Balamii.

As well as broadcasting, Donwella selects as part of the Coop Audio collective, a non-profit soundsystem group based between London and Bristol, and also runs Free Range, a monthly party in London featuring some of the best selectors the UK has to offer.

This week, we're starting the week off just right...this mix does it all:

“Ascending and descending through a spectrum genres, from hip-hop, to neosoul, funk, house, broken beat, garage – with jazz as the thread that flows through it all! Topping and tailing with some beautiful South African Jazz, starting at the 70s and ending at the present day.”

"My approach to recording mixes always differs everywhere from concept to techniques. For this one, I used vinyl with DJ Tools sounds with an APC40 controller, Ableton and MPC 300. 70-80% of this mix is unreleased, original material without the use of record samples, but recorded on analog equipment instead including a Juno 106, MPC 300 and Fender guitar. It also features sounds from old Soviet cartoons about space.

As for concept and sound, this mix doesn't sound like one I would usually play live at a club or festival show. For me music is either information or energy — you can find both elements in this mix. Besides, it's not a recording of a live set; people will be listening to it at their homes. That's why I started with the most soulful material and sprinkled in some old favourites to hopefully reach a new audience of people who haven't yet listened to my music. I guess, we haven't 'shaken hands' yet but this is my way of saying welcome". - @BMBSpacekid
