A new generation of enthusiasts has been revitalizing the electronic spectrum of the East Coast of the United States in recent years. Places appear under the impulse of new figures. Volvox is one of these. Active since 2006, she has constantly promoted a fresh and festive vision, in Boston and then in New York since 2011 where she organizes the evenings (named after her label) JACK DEPT. at the renowned Bossa Nova Civic Club as well as the more muscular UNTER sessions. On the program, plenty of acid, particularly versatile beats and absolutely uncontrolled skids. Everything we love.

We met I Hate Models last year somewhere in the northern suburbs of Paris. We were both playing at different shows that night. After this spontaneous meeting, IHM took us to a pretty raw afterparty, underneath a bridge. It was grimy, the place filled up by forceful techno, lots of naked bodies and heavy boiling temperatures. We discovered a common interest in certain experimental music. Since I Hate Models is mostly playing big room techno events nowadays, we thought it could be an interesting experiment to bring him into a different context, where he’d be able to tell another story. That was last week, at the Red Light Radio studio for the Knekelhuis takeover during Amsterdam Dance Event.

Not many DJs can claim to experience as meteoric, grassroots ascent as SPFDJ. Having established a remarkable energy, style and attitude on the underground techno circuits of both London and Berlin, she is known for inspiring debauchery and sweat-soaked hedonism on an international scale. Typically operating at a blisteringly high-tempo, an SPFDJ trip takes no prisoners in it’s exploration of strains of techno, acid, EBM, hardcore and trance. It’s a style that Ben UFO called “utterly ruthless”, and one that more and more clubbers are submitting to; a gleefully chaotic two-fingers to dance music’s self-serious establishment.
