Every now and then we come across a gem hidden in the depths of Soundcloud, unheard and undiscovered, waiting for their music to grace the world's ears. Making soft, soothing, piano laden goodness, we got in touch with Latvian beat maker <a href="https://www.facebook.com/broove"> Broove </a> to kindly ask him to create this week's Slumber Session and boy has he delivered. "I had a dream. It was a regular day – with a big, sleepy yawn I stood up from the bed, washed my face, ate a peanut butter sandwich, put up my clothes, and started to pack my bag for the university. When I was ready, I came to the door to open it, but couldn’t do it. Something wasn’t right. I tried to open it again, and only then I saw how my hand went through the door handle. Immediately after realizing that, I found myself lying in the same bed, thinking „What the hell just happened? Was it a dream? It was so real!” I’ve never been so confused in my life. If things in dreams can be as real as in everyday life, then what does ‘real’ even mean?"

"This mix is like a balmy day riding the waves. You wade into the water with some teasing flute courtesy of Mozambo's remix of St Germain. Next you paddle out with a handful of disco classics, and, just as you see the waves on the horizon rolling in, the bumpier soulful house emerges. The filter effects and builds in the mix warn of what's coming on the horizon. Sure enough, the mix crescendos with 4/4 garage, crashing back down to the gentler, quirkier electronic sounds of Bearcubs remix of my track 'Echo': perfect for a day to surf to."

Super elusive techno mystic Nebuchadnezzar - favourite of Blackest Ever Black’s Kiran Sande, among many many others, here with a super rare physical release, deploying 90 minutes of hard techno ballistics infused with highly atmospheric pressure, hugely tipped if yr into Carrier, Hoavi, Chain Reaction’s Matrix, Live Adult Entertainment, Quiet Husband, Regis, Lost Domain.

For Reel Torque’s auspicious 30th release, the San Francisco-based, US-Ukrainian wunderkind Nebuchadnezzar lays down 90 minutes mostly derived from his own productions. Playing between 4-6am on a bill shared with Jam City, DJ Loser, Tamus and Conor Thomas; Nebu showcased one of the most extraordinary mutations in contemporary techno and 157bpm+ club music, hypnotising a crowd with a patented, peerless masterclass in modern body music. You kinda had to be there - engulfed by the smoke, strobes, and bodies of The White Hotel - for optimal effect. But this tape, recorded and mastered by TWH sound engineer, Miles RS, clearly conveys the unique tip-toe balance of ballistics and atmospheric pressure that Nebuchadnezzar has made his own over the past 6 years of prized releases, and is properly put into hypnotic context in the club.

Mesmerising from start to finish with a seamless, almost laminar flow of offbeat drum patterns that appear to fold-in on themselves mid-phrase but always go forward, alloyed with a melange of textures and samples lifted from ‘90s noir thrillers, grime radio chat, and contemporary warehouse techno, Nebuchadnezzar kept the ‘floor going quite unlike anyone else. There’s no big drops or overworked: just a ceaseless but exquisitely tempered flow of his own material, which notoriously average around 10 minutes individually, but are here layered and chained into an inexorable traction on 3 x CDJs.

For us, Nebu’s sound vividly flashes back to febrile memories of being snagged in the subbass-powered hydrodynamics of tech-step, flashcore and frenchtek at Manc free parties in the ‘00s, but uchronically warped with aspects of original grime (a curiosity he admits was piqued by sitcom ‘PJDN’ and has turned into personal edits of Target, Dizzee, Youngstar classics) and subtle rhythmic accentuation of new Latin machine music, with the gritty focus of new Eastern European techno. Held in an atmospheric physics with the sleazy sheen of samples from ‘90s noir thrillers and slivers of cold-rushing trance, the result is just an absolute chef’s kiss of uncompromising, contemporary dance music that taps into something far more essentialist and non-clouty than so many others, and feels entirely of the 2020s. Fucking love it to bits.

Over the years his sound has morphed into various forms all meant to be an expression of different ideas and emotions. Unbound by any specific thing, his unique blend of sounds can be found in his multiple releases.

Sarkawt Hamad is a DJ whose sets strike a rare balance: they are melodic and grooving narratives that activate a dancefloor’s collective body, but also press the dancer to really listen, to hear a wild range of textures, timbres, bliss and grit. With a fully-rounded sound ranging from leftfield- and dub-techno to sparkling house to breakbeat-derived bumpers, the sum total is a kind of mesmerizing sublime – both eerie and blissful, alien and loving. Threads of vocal samples are often woven in and out, and pivots from chugging bass to bright and weightless terrains animate the seamless progression. In the artist’s own words, each set is built as a layering of moods and dynamics.

When i was doing my weekly DJ-centric web TV broadcast Overdrive Infinity in the last few years  i noticed a group of young Parisian DJs and producers forming around the show, kids who would come almost every week and who vaguely knew each other from online. They were all lovers of Grime, US Club styles, Ballroom, Kuduro, Global club music, you name it, just like me. They were the new generation of french underground music makers, but they were also quickly realizing that even though it brilliantly borrowed tropes from different dance music styles originated in various countries, their sound wasn’t specifically french-sounding if that means anything. As i befriended them, we got the idea to try and think of a new identity for a french club sound that didn’t exist anywhere else and that would be a confluence of some of the various electronic music styles which had an impact on the french audience. After a certain number of discussions online and IRL, during sessions in the same studios where Overdrive Infinity was taking place, an embryo of a new genre was slowly being born.

Out of the blue a severe explosion occurred in the building next door to the studio due to a gas leak, making the studio impossible to use and later on forcing parent company Dailymotion to sadly terminate the projects attached to it, Overdrive Infinity included. We no longer had a place to meet regularly but that idea of a new french sound kept flourishing, becoming more and more concrete as we all kept getting together at club nights and whatnot. Towards the end of 2016 the first Bérite Club music tracks (named after Rue de Bérite in honor of the street of the defunct studio) started appearing and being played at small club nights, and just like that a movement was born. 

Today i am collecting a lot of these early Bérite Club Music tracks and mixing them together with influences that were discussed during our reunions, trying to put together a sort of manifesto for what Bérite Club Music should, or at least could be, in the form of a sonic collage. It’s a starting point for a new generation of producers to build on, and hopefully take to the next level as the style matures and becomes more and more tangible.
