The Modern Revivalist, Popularly known as Proud Refuge, is a Rapper, singer, song-writer, and entrepreneur. The Kenyan American king is among a new breed of artists bridging the gap by taking the trap sensibility and elevating it to its great effect. Slipping between rapping and singing in English and Swahili, he represents his home and heritage boldly. His smooth delivery and evocative vocal tone pair well with the bouncy, energetic production that defines his sound. At just 23 years old, Refuge rise from local rapper with swagger to compelling artist equipped with a message, has been refreshing to watch. As evidenced by his projects, “Mountain Movers Club” (2017) and “Modern Revivalist” (2019)  Refuge has plenty of his culture and wisdom to impart, and people are rapidly connecting to his candid approach. There’s a sense of transparency that comes through in his music, a refined awareness that can only be gained through experience and honing of his craft.

Known for his fluid melodies and witty bars, Refuge was first introduced to the Kenyan music industry in 2012 by Gospel legend Rufftone under lampstand records which debuted his first single titled “Live” as (Malachi) Featuring Kenyan Hip-Hop originator Juliani. Prior to this Refuge had released several mixtape singles including a 10 track project titled “Freshly Redeemed” in 2011. In the years to follow, Refuge developed his artistry further, re-evaluating the style of music he wanted to create, mastering his sound, and stockpiling records under the rap moniker pesa which he later dropped in 2015. Having worked with fetty wap's producer Dj Cooley and Bay Area legend  Q-heem, Refuge also boasts features with Nigerian rising star Limoblaze, Nkay and Gil Joe to name a few. Refuge gained more popularity after his song “Sight” featuring Sajan Nayarial was picked up by the “The Ace family” youtube channel and racked up over 10 million views. 

Refuge inherited the name ‘Proud Refuge’ in late 2015, shortly after surrendering his life to God and overcoming an ongoing battle of chronic fear and depression. Consequently, he discovered his purpose to inspire and deliver others facing similar circumstances through his music. This birthed his movement, Mountain Movers Club in 2016, a collective movement whose sole mission is ignite hope and impact middle school and high school students against suicide and drug abuse. His music not only continues to touch lives  locally, but globally transcending past his regions barrier crossing over in millions of streams on spotify. Currently Refuge tours performing at schools speaking and impacting students all around the world. “I stand out because I don’t know of many, if any, rappers that are persistent about making impacts on kids lives through the avenue of school assemblies as I am.
