Following from the buzz garnered by his remix for Machinedrum last Fall, Shadow has applied his production techniques to a fascinating subject: '70s Dutch prog band Supersister.  Releasing a handful of albums on Polydor between 1970 and 1974, the band counted among its ranks one Robert Jan Stips, whose keyboard playing caught the ear of Shadow way back in the mid '90s.  (That's Robert Jan's playing you hear sampled on both the "Organ Donor Remix" AND "Rabbit In Your Headlights" by Unkle!)  Stips and Shadow met in 2010 at one of Shadow's Netherlands "Shadowsphere" shows, and a discussion was introduced about the possibility of a remix or other collaboration.  "It just seemed appropriate," says Shadow, "Given how influenced I've been by RJ Stips' playing.  Plus, it's a great way to draw attention not only to the songs I've sampled, but their broader work as well."  On his remix, Shadow interpolates portions of "Dona Nobis Pacem" by Supersister, and twists them into a complex framework inspired by elements of footwork and the contemporary California beat scene (check out that drop!!!)

Bristol-based solo electronic producer LTO @lto-oa returns to Injazero Records following his debut, 2015’s No Pasa Nada EP. 

While plaudits for LTO have tended to focus their praise on No Pasa Nada’s tense and eerie programming, its deep sonics and waves of static, Storybook gives us access to the beating heart within the machine. It is an album not purely of mechanics, but also of human warmth, formed with a colour palette of equal digital and organic materials. There is expression and articulation, delicateness of performance, voices both natural and treated, piano and brass, all deftly placed about a canvas of electronic fabrics.

LTO first made waves as part of mysterious electronic collective Old Apparatus. Their music - anonymous, dark, ghostly, subterranean - was reminiscent of garage and grime scenes, but sheened with a nocturnal miasma and a fierce intellect, obfuscated by deliberate myth-making. And while LTO as a solo producer retains elements of this darkness and beguiling sound-design, Storybook sees him let the light in.

A vision is laid out by album opener ‘Change’. It combines gentle, dulcet synthesis with a percussive line made of table-tennis recordings and Spanish-language voices that softly echo in and out of the space, like Katie Gately remixed into Brian Eno’s ambient records or the poise of Max Richter filtered through Chris Clark’s production lens. These themes wander and weave through the record. They comprise willfully corrupted notions of the ‘single’: broken, distorted vocal pieces that never quite move as expected, yet somehow remains approachable and deeply touching. They comprise fluidity and elasticity, a human-ness that enwraps the mechanical parts, in the same sense as Holly Herndon or Nils Frahm. A highly accomplished pianist (indeed, a piano teacher in his civilian life), LTO’s astute musicality is the foundation stone beneath the magic and abstractions of Storybook.

Injazero Records will release Storybook on 180g vinyl and digital formats on June 23rd 2017. The record was mastered by Taylor Deupree (Dustin O’Halloran, William Basinski, Helios) of 12k Mastering.

For the past several years Ravitz has been keeping up his production of house and techno music via different outfits like Inhalants, Masks, or Pulpo and most notably Patricia with his last year’s release – an epic 3LP record – ‘Several Shades of the Same Color’. His recent effort called ‘Free Lunch’ explores one of the directions presented on the album, however this time adding more color in the palette. 

Continuing to tool and retool his modular synth rack, on ‘Free Lunch’ Ravitz produces energetic electro tracks that show a shift from the familiar hazy murkiness to a fairly present sound and almost song-like writing that introduces layered melodies, acid grooves and luscious pointillism. ‘Your Battery Is Leaking’ is a groovy electro track with sizzling hi-hats, grimy bass tune and a lot of acid, while ‘Consumer Recreation Services’ is a heady trip of restless arpeggios and melting synths. ‘Placeholder’ combines the ingredients of the first two tracks and ‘Early Stages of Something’ brings back the grimy bass and lively groove. Finally ‘Winnipeg’ is the perfect closer returning to layered synth melodies and syncopated bass that brings back the feel of ‘I Know The Face, But Not The Name’ from his last album.
