Weekly Wave

Excerpts from the sound composition of the stage piece "Paramècis i Meteorits" by Xesca Salvà i Marc Villanueva. 

PARAMECIS I METEORITS (PARAMECIUMS AND METEORITES). Understory: 1st episode

In Paramecis i Meteorits, set designer Xesca Salvà and playwright Marc Villanueva propose an equally gentle and radical movement, but they begin with their eyes on the microscope.

The first part in a longer collaborative tour titled Understory, Paramecis i Meteorits takes the life of bacteria and fungi as its starting point. Yes: fungi. Microorganisms governed by horizontal and non-hierarchical structures. A biological field defined by multiplicity— also in sexual and reproductive terms! —where the overarching rule is not selfishness, but symbiosis.

To bridge the gap between this paradoxically progressive dimension of existence and our own, the Salvà/Villanueva duo place the character of Lynn Margulis as the main focus. Margulis (1938-2011), an American biologist, was the first to extrapolate what she had learned about these microorganisms to a planetary scale. From fungi to the cosmos, her theory opened the door to observing the earth as a huge web of interdependence and evolution, as a process in which symbiosis is more primitive than Darwinist competition.

Revolutionary both in her hypotheses and methodology, Lynn Margulis defended speculation—the necessary link between science and fiction—as a touchstone for her praxis. By giving fabulation an equally important role, Xesca and Marc have designed a stage show that lies somewhere between an installation and an immersive experience. Within this framework, they invoke Margulis through conversations with six local biologists and explore how we can be inspired by her work and the currents of activity that run beneath our feet.

A small attempt at leaving our anthropocentric arrogance behind and embracing the unquenchable diversity of life.

"Émancipés du vide ?"
Est une réflexion mélancolique sur les gouffres émotionnels que l'humain entretient, sur la difficulté de nous extirper de nos attractions diverses vers le néant, nos incapacités à regarder les déchets mentaux que nous produisons sans passer par la case culpabilité, c'est une critique de la normalisation, du conformisme, du positivisme creux vanté par nos esprits trop marketés et en quête du chemin le plus rapide vers un Sens quel qu'il soit. L'illusion d'être libre dans un monde qui vante des platitudes érigées en valeurs censées incarner cette liberté et pourtant située à vingt mille lieues sous ce que pourrait être un début de chemin vers une liberté effective. Enfin, il symbolise la nécessité vitale de retrouver notre naïveté perdue et de réapprendre à voir le beau et à œuvrer en ce sens.

La grâce de la solitude ou l'anxiété sociale :
Premier morceau qui ouvrira l'album, traite de la difficulté d'évoluer dans le contexte du groupe social face à cet animal qui fonctionne bien trop souvent comme un inhibiteur d'individus et qui par les réflexes et stéréotypes qui conduisent ces groupes, et le consensus vers le médiocre que cette masse désire trop souvent, peuvent mettre très mal à l'aise une partie des humains qui se sentent bridés et inadaptés au fonctionnement de ces amas d'humains angoissants tant ils peuvent rapidement muer en usines à oppressions pour peu qu'une tête ose contourner certaines des coutumes en vigueur.

Il a était tourné globalement sur les hauteurs de Mirepoix (09)en complément nous avons quelques images de ce morceau joué lors des concerts à la ferme thuronis Alaigne (11) et au café associatif de Marquefave (31) en août 2024

The initial melody could be famous, but I don't know who (where and when) composed it. It was the melody of the carillon (in the picture) that some friends gave to my daughter, who was just born. We sung (adding words) and played it for years, even and especially after the music box broke, not to forget it. 
The piece is dedicated to her, who is now 18. The melody of the music box is followed by some (very posed) arias representing the successive stages of her life, childhood and adolescence. The carillon's melody resumes at the end: because I am sure she still hears it, deep down, and that it accompanies her as life goes on.

Composition – The Eclectic Collective

This song began about half a year ago, as part of a three song set that Ken started with some really cool beats. Josh was first to the trough for here, laying in his fretless bass groove to complete the foundation and give it some tonal direction. Stephen came next and laid in the really trippy textural guitar that you hear throughout. JJ was next with his serious, no joke organ playing, which sets the mood for the whole thing. Last, but not least, Tez joined by adding some really cool accent guitar throughout.
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer, so we tapped Stephen to do the honors on this.
  We had originally made this and the other two song with the intention of having The Mysterious Decibel and his friend Modes About Me sing on them. However, life got in the way, so we sat on them. Finally, MD let us know that he wasn't able to complete the project with us, much to everyone's, including his, disappointment. However, MD did lay down a rough vocal demo for us, which Stephen very ably processed to sound almost like another instrument in there. So, we're releasing this song as a tribute to them both, with gratitude, especially to MD for all the great work he's put in with us. If you're not familiar with either of them, do yourself a favor and check them out.   This is an example of what it sounds like when the whole band composes a song together. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

Am posting some Jarre sounding pieces as homage to my lifelong hero of electronic music, using some of the sounds and instruments he has used along the way. Jar of Jarre is my collection of memorable sounds which have changed the way we appreciate modern electro.

New year, new start. Back on the search for good music and inspiration. Will be featuring a lot of my older work remastered this year, seems like a long time since I began my composing journey back in 2000.

Am back to making regular music now but sorry no Christmas songs this year. This time of year is very hard for me as it is when my father became very ill and died in the new year 2010. I still miss him very much but hope he would be proud of my musical journey, he is my number one inspiration.
Just a quick personal note on AI and music. I think it is not a good thing for the creative side of music and a lot of it comes without feelings or soul. Creativity is a gift, and should be greatly valued, cherished and nurtured. Music is what makes us human and can never be replaced by a computer.
Finished remastering up to and including 2023 now. Has been a mammoth task but well worth the effort. Next year I shall be working on a remastered series of my pre KORG days 2000 to 2008, in 8 volumes, as well as celebrating in style my 10 years of KRONOS magic, can't wait for 2025.
Have now amassed over 1000 tracks on SC (that's over 8000 minutes of music) and it has been a blast sharing them with you all. Next year 2025, marks the 10th anniversary of the start of my KORG journey.
Am currently putting together a remastered Anthology collection of all my best tracks from 2015 onwards. 2015 consists of a 3 volume set (Now available on Bandcamp). 2016 consists of a 4 volume set. I have been lucky to have music in my life, and now the time to explore how it can affect other people. I have discovered many new talented artists on SC and am happy to encourage and support their work; from small beginnings come great things. Please be inspired to be your best, inspire others too, encourage those who lack the inner courage to move forward, and together we can make music make a difference in all our lives.
Am spending a lot more time on my music now since retiring from work in July 2020. Always learning new techniques and honing my craft. Am comfortable now with all chord sequences throughout the scales and loving improvising with the help of my mighty KORG still. Am still trying to give my full support and encouragement to all SC users and some latest (you know who you are), are developing nicely. Be good to one another, be gracious to others, leave your ego out of your life and above all else remember there is always someone worse off than yourself. 
Please be kind to each other, to be happy with our lot without jealousy or greed; to give without asking the cost; to love as if there is no tomorrow; to share and inspire others who may be less fortunate than us; most of all to enjoy life for the joy of living, for we know not what the morning brings - stay safe my friends, be strong and always stay positive; remember life changes - DON'T let it change you!!
