I’m a Kurdish captive of Newroz dawn,
My soul is chained, in silent fire drawn.

A sparkless ember on Yalda’s night,
Awaiting a fate lost to the light.

The voiceless dove of a spring undone,
A colorless flower in the weeping sun.

In the corner of a barren, silent fest,
I’m a black-cloaked beauty at her best.

The vanished hand of my proud tribe’s grace,
The bitter scent of a love I chase.

At the grave of a forgotten martyr I cry,
A thirsty, twisted tree under a sunless sky.

I am the poet’s dusty, crumpled page,
A tomb-lit candle, a funeral stage.

I’m the bent reed of old songs’ sound,
A tainted blood, where bitter memories are found.

The flame-draped shawl of morning’s cry,
My father—a whisper, my son—a sigh.

Burnt wings of a moth in prayer’s flight,
Empty wineglass in a tavern of night.

The scent of rosemary from distant lands,
An out-of-tune instrument in unseen hands.

A broken rhythm on yellow hills’ bed,
Wounded, sick—what pain can I shed?

The last sunbeam of autumn’s flame,
An aged, bitter poet with no name.

So how can I tell you what I am?
Even I doubt whether I truly am.
