Depression By- Rage Almighty (Spoken Word)


I'm sick and tired of hearing grown-ups speak for teenagers,
Singing the `Anthem of the Teens` we never wrote,
Bottled up voices, we have been silenced
I'm sick of hearing slander of an age group lead astray,
People wonder why our generation is so dysfunctional,
You forget that we were raised being told there was no such thing as perfection or 10/10,
That beauty was found on TV screens, in flawless skin and six-packs,
That love never lasts and people will only want us if we can fit ourselves into beauty like shoes that are too small.
Try going outside when the world is full of cat calls, wolf whistles from people twice our age,
When we are told to fit ourselves into categories long outdated:
`Male` or `Female`
`Straight` or `Gay`
Transgender, Asexual, these were words we were never taught,
And if you never get the all-clear you cannot know what is right,
or accepted,
It is sad that I know more people who self harm, than people who know what they want to be when they are older,
Reality has sucked the ambition out of us, we are confined to dead end jobs,
These days, we have `realistic dreams` and `unrealistic dreams`
Because dreams are so well known for being realistic!
We have kept our dreams held close and filed away because we know they are so easy to break,
And everyone we have ever shown has always said `Impossible` and tried to give us a replacement,
It is sad If you ask me to name you a drug addict,
I can point at a random student in my school corridor and have a 1 in 10 chance of getting it right,
We are all afraid of different things,
but reality is the one thing that scares all of us,
And when you are so high you're seeing purple dragons,
part of you wants to hit the ground hard so that they are the last thing you see,
We look for love in one another,
Search for moments of perfection in a catastrophe,
Love in a wasteland of nuclear fallout,
Bearing our skin and innocence in the hopes someone out there finds us beautiful
Our parents lied about Santa and the tooth fairy, so they cannot be the judge if we are attractive,
right?
My science teacher taught me,
That as we get older, the lies start of peel away like the skins of an onion,
And I wish she was still talking about the curriculum,
When you get older you start to see the cracks in your own skin,
As the system starts to pump conformity into your blood,
You wonder how our age group came to this!
The alcohol, crack cocaine, the under-age sex,
We are all just trying to kill ourselves before this gets worse,
We could not tell you how long ago we stopped believing in `it gets better`,
And If you don't believe me,
The next time you see a teenager on the way too, from or in school,
Look at their eyes,
Look at the moment they see right through your shallow lies,
Look at how they understand the broken, the hollow, the tired beggars of people once whole,
I remember scanning my maths class the day we got told we were getting put into another exam we didn't need,
Our futures were in the hands of men too used to working with machines than with children,
Unlike the last time, we didn't protest,
We sat back in our chairs, ran hands through our hair, some picked the scabs on their wrists,
Our eyes were dry and tired,
My teacher looked at us, I can see her tears even now, and all she could say was “I'm sorry”
Later I heard her yelling at senior management,
There is nothing worse than watching someone die,
I know that,
We were all happy kids once,
With bright eyes and a great sense of humour,
That's who she knew before this madness,
Now look at us,
Looking for hope in the smallest places,
Diving into danger, hoping it will keep our souls alive just a little longer,
Don't you dare ever tell me the system is not broken.
I have seen too many dead souls in the school corridors to ever believe that ever again.
We are not singing no anthem of yours
There is no patriotism in broken hearts,
Or suicide notes,
Or long sleeves covering scars from the nights that never seemed to end,
Now we are all grown up, our demons are no longer confined to nightmares,
They perch on our shoulders like mockingbirds,
And sing our flaws outwards,
A broken system creates broken people,
And I fear the day,
You see what you have created.

As I stand on this street corner and watch these two roads meet i suddenly feel at peace
Maybe its because at my feet lies the intersection of two distinct paths merging at a point of vulnerability
Maybe because its a reminder of you and me, and the blissful bond we once shared
Without a care in the world, my arms wrapped around you to shelter you from the cold
Two souls kept warm by each others company 
Two hearts dancing in the rain playfully
Two minds with the same thing in mind, you want me to be yours and i want you to me mine
I don't know maybe i'm crazy 
Maybe time has finally out played me 
Maybe i've stopped seeing beauty in the little things
Maybe i've stopped appreciating the gift life brings

Maybe i failed and i couldn't clean up the mess
Maybe thats why the rain suddenly feels colder on my skin
Maybe thats why whenever i try to apologize i don’t know where to begin or where to end all these things that i typed up in my mind and i wanna tell you but i just cant bring myself to hit "send".
Maybe i fucked up and i won't admit it 
Maybe i'm a coward
Seems like i've got all the time in the world maybe i should do something about it
I mean, every minute feels like an hour
Maybe i'm a fool for distancing myself from you
Maybe thats why i couldn't admit i loved you
Because for some reason i couldn't accept that maybe, 
just maybe,
You might have loved me too.

To This Day

Jazz-ish tune I wrote after a period of abstinence from using swing rhythms. I've had it on hold for a while, and yesterday I finally managed to complete it :)

My Father said I could be anything I want to be. And its up to me to turn my daydreams into realities  And typically,I just go with the flow as I paddle streams 
But now my passion burns like calories for my purpose in this thing called life
What position do I play?
I'm on a mission every day to decipher what kinda life 
I should lead. 
Should I lead? Should I follow. 

Am I filled or am I hallow? 

I need water cuz this life has been a tough pill to swallow. 

Although that begs the question, Who am I?

No seriously who am I?

I haven't come to a conclusion

I need answers

But all I have is options. 

And my heart is always shopping for new identities that need adopting. 

Cuz I've been the outcast. I've been the jock. 

I've been the straight shooter. I've run from cops. 

I feel like an actor but in this scene they took away the props



I have nothing to hide behind

And here I stand, exposed. 

Like tan lines 
Left with the question, who am I?
3 simple words to plan my time 
And theyre vital 
My minds on stand by 

My soul's still idle 
Titles describe content 
And I've been a book without a cover
asked my father and my mother 
For assistance or some other kind of help. I'm feeling smothered. By the media. It hovers what I want in front. 
Another and another and another. I've discovered. Nothing. 
Who am I?
Everything i planed to be hasn't work out. InsanityWebster can't define me 

You are looking at a jack of all trades
Wearing a  mask of all shapes 

Ready to act with no shame

It seems my possiblties are endless 
I could be someone to follow 
Or someone hardly worth a mention
Like twitter 
I'm bitter because my friends are trend setters and dress better that me.  
I'm not tendy am I?
But I could change
And spend my change and dollar bills on fancy thangs 

And swallow pills
Like my friends do.
I don't do drugs but I love to pretend to 
I mean it's hard to turn down what they lend you 
What they send you. Weekends tend to 
Be a curious set of days. 
Friday and Saturday I do it all  

But by Sunday I'm ashamed of what I did
I'm on the fence. And here I sit. 

I go to church sometimes and each time I ask God to answer the question. 
Who am I? 
Does He know? 
Does he care?
Are you listening. Are you there?
It only makes sense to ask the Maker

why he made what he made. 

Since we all look different our purposes can't all be the same. 

I am someone. 
An individual. Who's mostly confused and partially spiritual. 

Looking to answer this question. 
Praying the Maker will respond
Hoping society will quiet down 
So I can listen.
