"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

Versions is a collaborative project between electronic musician Chris Child (synths & production) and classical pianist Angelica Olstad. 

Creating innovative arrangements by combining Olstad’s anachronistic piano parts with Child’s deeply nuanced and orchestral-like production, the two have crafted an unprecedented electroacoustic body of work informed by classical forms such as concerti and chamber music blended with minimalism and electronic music. Tonally and stylistically, Child’s production brings a deeply emotional and cinematic quality to the project. 

Olstad first began her journey in interactive composition as a music student in graduate school. Frustrated by the limitations of formal training and an inability to improvise, she began to experiment with a deconstructed technique of taking small motivic passages from classical repertoire and reworking the music to create new compositions. Influenced by Ravel, Debussy to the likes of Nicolas Jaar, Bjork, Nils Frahm and the minimalism of Philip Glass, Olstad uses a combination of layering, repetition, and rhythmic manipulation to create original pieces. Her intention is to re-contextualize classical music for a modern audience by collaborating with new media artists.

For Child, one of the most challenging aspects of the project was keeping the piano parts as transparent as possible, all the while honing in on an aesthetic direction that captured the mood and feeling in them. Working with a pallet of synths, field recordings, and noises, Child’s aim was to feature the piano and create a unique sonic environment for each of the pieces. 

Both artists have a shared love for classical music and worked closely together for over a year to create a body of work that was inspired by the notion of taking something old and revered in a new direction. “Versions” presents this exploration
