Ibadan Records label head Jerome Sydenham teams up with Kerri Chandler and a host of musical talents on four takes of this Brazilian inspired track and exhibit their musical prowess.
One night at Betty Carter’s jazz show, Jerome Syndenham approached pianist Marc Cary to join in an improv studio session for Espirito du Tempo, inspired by the classic Brazilian folk song. Cary’s jam on the Fender Rhodes was sheer perfection, recorded in one breathtaking live take and gaining momentum, depth and euphoria all the way. Another night trawling the jazz clubs of New York, Sydenham and co-producer Kerri Chandler came across Randy Weston and Talib Kibwe and promptly put them to work on the sax version of the track. Kibwe pulls his part off with incredible virtuosity – listen for the single note he manages to sustain for an insanely long moment. Phenomenal performances for a classic record.

No stranger to the FH premiere in-tray is our favourite haired Australian, Jad & The (@jad-lee) who takes a ride out of town for a  trip, @downbythelake. Helmed by Smallville's Julius Steinhoff, the imprint makes it's forth foray into the sonisphere with this four tracked introspective beauty, with none other than Moomin on remix duty.

The Beats of No Nation co-founder delivers three cuts which shimmer on the surface, while getting down deep enough to look what lies beneath. Despite it's nonchalant title, 'That's Cool' sports a pensive loop, accompanied by equally as earnest textures, all beautifully counterbalanced with luscious percussion. Squinting over Taupo you can just make out where the blazing ether melts into the icey blue. It was worth the ride.

Now I’ve never seen Miami Vice, but I’m thinking if the Japanese had a similar series, this latest offering from Anton Bogomolov (ScruScru), would be perfect as its theme song. Think two detectives, dressed in loud suits roaming around Kyoto fighting crime. From chasing goons down alleyways to following up leads in their flashy convertible, these two are not to be messed with. 

ScruScru hails from Russia and funnily enough he’s created a tune inspired by the warmer months in Kyoto. Most of his work is pieced together through sampling. Be it Soviet symphonic jazz to romantic Russian singers of old, Anton plucks sounds from some fairly unusual places. He tells us that he “tries to structure his music from the get go and not get carried away with improvisation”. 

‘Kyoto Sun’ is a jolly trip. Looped guitar licks and twinkling keys kickstart the track, which are then joined by soaring trumpet and a mysterious Japanese vocal sample (which I’m sure he found via crate digging). The ‘Fuji Editz’ EP (out through our good pals at SlothBoogie), will give you a taste of something a little different. ‘Kyoto Sun’ is like a time warp, you could swear you were sitting in a tiny wooden bar in Japan some 40 years ago, sipping a whisky you’ve never heard of before.
