I wrote this following the passing of my grandfather.   When I came out and left the religious extremism behind, he shut me out.   I found out he passed away by accident.  I used to still send him cards and he would send me cards.   I tried to reconnect with him but he would never respond to my invites to reconnect.   I tried everything I could.  His passing leaves behind so much hurt and pain.  Please never turn your back on someone because of who they love.   Religions aren't worth it when they destroy your family and demand you hold bigoted hateful views.   If you're part of a religion and your family member is LGBTQ and that religion condemns them, the choice should be a no brainer.  You walk away from that religion because it's clearly lying and seeking to harm your family.  He never did.  I tried to connect so many times.  He refused to and never would.  I wrote this song to express what I'm feeling in the wake of his death that my relatives never told me occurred.   The title You Never Let Me In refers to a picture he always had of Jesus knocking on a door and how he met religion in, but not his own grandson when he needed it most.   When I told him I was engaged to my partner he said, "That's too bad.  I'm sorry to hear that." It was crushing and still hurts deeply.   Don't let that be the legacy you leave like he did.
