When the Das Druid’s album landed in our inbox, we admittedly listened with skepticism. A whole album, a whole damn album!? But a few minutes in the skepticism turned into romanticism and we were immersed and in love with the Das Druid sound. I mean whats not to love when it sounds like a combination of three of your favourite bands - Primal Scream, The Stone Roses, and Happy Mondays. 

A nod to Manchester, the Hacienda, rave culture, being ‘lost in the music’, and all music based upon groove the ‘Das Album’ is a retro-futurist approach to modern-day psychedelia. Pure bliss from start to finish Das Druid’s  ‘Das Album’ is available April 22nd worldwide via Beats of No Nation.

Maara’s latest effort comes straight from the inner zone. Whether meant for use as vision quest guidance or club hedonism, Fancy Feast continues the Canadian’s tradition of crafting seductive, trance-inducing dance music in mesmeric fashion. 

‘Can’t Slo Down’ is a vehicle for transcendence. Locked-in, hypnotic fare with subtle gear shifts consistent with Maara’s propensity towards trippy atmospherics and urgent dancefloor dynamics. Then, in a heady alloy of ritual throb and fractal warehouse ruffness, ‘Highrollerz’ finds Maara at her most propulsive. 

Prog reigns supreme across the record, but 'Princess Express' has the third-eye dilating magick in full effect. It’s both fractal and functional, a ritual incantation with rugged appeal. ‘Rude, Crude & Out Of Control’, on the other hand, harks back to those halcyon days of the free party movement. Proper breakbeat torque with yet another healthy dose of prog.

Licht Himmel was conceived as a 14-channel-composition for the Gasometer Oberhausen, a former gas tank and now an industrial landmark. Instrumental and electronic sounds are combined with field recordings to form a composition for this special environment. The stereo version was remastered in 2012.

A song about the discrepancy between the idealization of a distorted individualism, constantly conveyed by contemporary mass media, and the actual standardization, or globalization, of human behaviours and actions that can be found today in Western or Westernized societies…

In loving memory of Massimo De Gasperi (1967-1999), a great musician and friend. There's currently no trace of his work on the internet, unfortunately, but he'd published an album with a German label a few months before passing away, if I remember correctly. It sounded way ahead of his time, and it still does today. I own a copy of it, but I'm not entitled to share it. I hope someone will do, someday.
He once called me while he was working on his album. One of his numbers' title was "Dead Hendrix", and he asked me if I could supply him with any recorded announcement of Jimi's death. He was planning to extrapolate a few words from it and use the samples on his track. Sadly I couldn't satisfy his request. I used to own dozens of Hendrix LPs and tapes, always loved and played his music, but I'd never been a collector. At the time, things like that couldn't be found on the internet.
A shot of heroin laced with strychnine killed him at 32.
In November 2019, a common friend asked me to join Massimo's 20th death anniversary party: "Come over and play", he said... I had to laugh, because he hadn't considered the fact that I was nearly 1000 miles away from home, and couldn't really afford to travel exclusively to join that party. So I recorded this tune, "That's Mean", very quickly, and about a week later I sent him the file. I easily found that Hendrix death announcement on YouTube, sampled a couple of sentences and used them in this song. He was so happy with it, included it in the music set for the night and told me that Massimo was very likely smiling from heaven while listening to it. I really hope this tune will make you all smile too.

'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised Strings' is Dane Law's (@thedanelaw) first release for Astral Plane Recordings, born out of a guest mix for NTS in August 2017. Across prior releases for Conditional, Genot Centre and Quantum Natives, the London-based artist has crafted a sonic space that merges pagan folklore, tensile algorithmic production and hyperrhythmic dance forms.

That NTS mix, titled “Digital Paganism”, was composed of a distinctly uncanny assemblage that drew from Arvo Pärt and The Wicker Man soundtrack. 'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised String's furthers the ideas introduced in “Digital Paganism”, a simultaneously explication of and alienation from its naturalistic tones gone haywire.

Across Algorithmic Music’s 12 songs, Dane Law’s delicate approach to composition is laid bare. Individual sound objects are isolated in space and rotated, forming plastic points in a series of eerie hymns. Guitar and synthesizer sounds are present, distanced from their quotidian origin points by an ascetic utilization of spatial mixing.

Built on MIDI files processed through a second order Markov strong algorithm, songs like “Running Hill” and “Southbound to denshaw” impose a certain music box familiarity, opening a portal to a world of skewed geometries where known forms are not what they seem. Meanwhile, the two part “Delph” saga embraces a spectral queasiness, morphing the ear’s ability to locate the shape of sound in time.

'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised Strings' is out digitally on April 24 and will be followed by a cassette release once regular trips to the post office are logistically feasible.
