A second take on his deeply personal July 2021 set at The Great Beyond in Franklin, Minnesota, the Minneapolis-based DJ @icarus-redux had this to say about his new flyover mix; read the whole interview on our website [www.flyoversound.com]:

"What starts to happen at the intersection of diving deeply into a body of work [and] your own mental health is, you can sink so deeply into your own research that it starts to manifest in really odd ways. For instance, you'll start dreaming, and your musical idols start talking to you in your dreams."

"It got really heavy…the long and short of it is that when I started setting aside time to set up this Great Beyond mix, I thought to myself, 'how do I capture the full gamut of this weird…psychosexual bullshit or psychological drama?' How do I represent it in an auditory form that remains somewhat true to what I actually experienced, while also [making it] composed of [mixed] music, and not just kind of a mishmash of found sound that's experimental, but not danceable in the festival setting?"

Since adopting the Bale Defoe moniker in 2015, Detroit native and Choose Better Friends co-owner, Ryan Thomas, has slowly but surely cemented himself as an artist to watch in the city. Following his sold out vinyl debut on UK-based ELE Records (whose releases include legend Javonntte and Byron the Aquarius), Bale Defoe has consistently dropped projects that take inspiration from the likes of Theo Parrish and Patrice Scott while maintaining the seasoned producer’s distinctive tender touch. His groove oriented DJ sets run the gamlet from of the moment house bangers to soulful classic gems, demonstrating his roots in Detroit music.

Live at The Great Beyond 2022

Went for a spacious but strongly beat-oriented vibe. There's a section 1/3 of the way in with triplet-based techno, a new fascination of mine - the beat density is less than in quadruplet-based rhythmic music, but our brains feel it as faster. Everything here is 122bpm but I tried to play with the perception of rhythmic density to alter your sense of time. Offering the soft kinds of hardness to the Berlin techno ecosystem.

This DJ set was recorded live on-air at Refuge Worldwide Berlin.
