My 5 hours set recorded live @ La Marquise boat in Lyon on October 11th. Different things played from Soul to Brazil, through Disco, edits, Modern Soul etc. All vinyl, some classics, some rare ones.

Not an easy night, Booth far from the dancefloor so a bit difficult to feel the crowd, plus a tricky turntable, shit 'Rihanna' requests while I blend records... But it was fun enough at the end of the day :)

Welcome visitor to a brandnew edition of my Quiet Dawn mixtape series focusing on ...Folk Psych Funk.
As the 1960s melted into the ’70s in a colourful swirl of musical possibility, bands and singer-songwriters were experimenting with newfound freedoms. The psychedelic era had brought about many changes and much political upheaval in its wake. Discrete genres became fluid. Many acts fused different sounds together. Rock would meet jazz. Soul was mixed with psychedelia. In this fecund environment the nebulous yet highly prized form of folk funk emerged.

In what’s become a goldmine for crate-digging hip-hop and electronic music producers, keen to find an obscure and funky sample not yet rinsed out or carrying the threat of litigation, folk funk is a blend of acoustic guitars, looping repetitive grooves, jazz touches and full fat drum breaks.

You hear classics of the genre from Kenny Rankin or Terry Callier ,rare new discoveries by Quiet World or Kathi Smith and a killer new psychedelic take on the afro samba classic canto de lemanya.

Celebrating 30 years of Soundgarden’s 5th album ‘Superunknown’, Block Party resident BobaFatt mixes up a bunch of cuts from the Seattle grunge band’s classic record, fronted by the late, great Chris Cornell.

This is an extended 22-minute version of a mix originally broadcast on BBC 6 Music, on Saturday March 16th 2024 on The Huey Show.

The mix was repeated again on Friday April 5th 2024 (as part of a grunge-related 'Kurt Cobain Forever' special show). The 15-minute radio edit is also included here immediately after, for the completists!
