Funk and Beyond Radio Show (Mar.15.2022)

Pepeu Gomes is a Brazilian guitar player and song writer from Bahia, a state in the northeast of the country. He came to fame in the 60's and 70's as a member of the popular group, Os Novos Baianos. Gomes would go on to have a long solo career, releasing over a dozen albums that, most notably, fused his rock guitar stylings with traditional choro music. His song that I've edited here, "Um Raio Raser", appears to have little to do with any of that. Laser Beam, as you would translate the tittle, catches Pepeu in a very 80's period of experimentation. His electric guitar is definitely present but so is a myriad of analog synths, a blazing horn section, laser sound effects, a funky groove and even a bit of jazz-influenced keys. I would say that this song is fairly obscure in Brazil and virtually unheard of outside the "pais tropical". This is the kind of song I tend to love... completely atypical of the artist's other output, created in a moment where they were experimenting artistically while trying to stay relevant to what was going on at the time. It was, very likely, dismissed by his hard core fans as a laps of judgement, created in an era of excess and bad decisions. Whatever it was that was actually going on during this recording session, I am thankful for, as it produced this crazy musical anomaly that I've edited for you here.

The edit is pretty straightforward, taking the parts I liked, ditching the pieces I didn't and using them to create a new arrangement. I've also added a nice 909 kick throughout to make it bump! Enjoy!

Jackson was born in Paraíba, Brazil,  his mother, Flora Mourão, was a musician and singer who played several percussion instruments. As a child he had originally wanted to play the accordion, but his parents could not afford it and bought him a pandeiro, a type of tambourine, in its place. When Jackson was 13 years old his family moved to Campina Grande, a city in Paraíba. After the move, Jackson lived in João Pessoa, where he performed in various cabarets and on the radio; and also to Recife, where he eventually began working in a radio station and took the pseudonym of Jackson do Pandeiro. Originally his mother had nicknamed him "Jack", after the actor Jack Perry, who played parts in cowboy films which were popular in Brazil during Jackson's youth.
