"I first met the founder of our favorite website back in 2013 when I booked him in Paris for his very first “Club Jazz” gig for an incredible edition of the Jazz Attitudes night. From that meeting was born our collaboration on MIMS as well as gigs where we share the same love and curiosity for music.

True to his trademark, Lexis put together a mix sharing many different tastes and influences, this time diving into 90’s jazz-nujazz-triphop treasures like The Sonic Family, Peshay and Up, Bustle & Out. The middle sees a couple jazzy older gems like South Africa’s Teaspoon Ndelu and the calypso Jazz of Rupert Clemendore. He closes out his mix with a few of his favorite Broken Beat x Jazz revisions like Art Blakey revisited by EVM 128 and Carlos Garett revised by Kyoto Jazz Massive and Moonstarr. That and a few more joints!"

I heard about Claud on accident a few years back. I remember hearing the single for "Guard Down" and thinking "Hey, that's pretty good. I should sample this."

My first idea was to do an NY Drill remix of it, thinking that because they were from New York, it would be kinda funny. Problem was, I never had the motivation and never got around to it. Later on I end up finding out that Claud... is not from New York. They're from Highland Park, IL. 


Realising I had no meme-like idea to pin this to, I just decided to do it in the style that I've enjoyed making. With the intention of possibly writing to it... giving it the intentional theme of Claud's voice being like my nervous system telling me "Don't Let Your Guard Down". The idea being the feeling of anxiousness with new love created by past relationships... and eventually learning to be vulnerable with my new love as it ends with "Let Your Guard Down".

Either way, this was fun to make, and I'm basically considering it done so I don't overthink it into mush. 

If Claud happens upon this: Hey. Thanks for being a musician. I thought the song was dope and I hope you enjoyed my little sample flip piece right here.

If you're wondering about the title: I wanted to reference "Guard Down" in a way that amused me... also I play a lot of fighting games, so I felt like an arrow for "crouch guarding" using your Super Monster era colour scheme would be a nice touch.
