This set was played by Recid on May 7th at the Backyard opening weekend. 

Recid is a longtime resident of ∄ who needs no introduction. He has provided us with many unforgettable Backyard moments. This set, however, is extra special as it was played during the first Backyard weekend since the full-scale invasion.

The series is updated on a weekly basis with recordings of sets that have been played in our space since the beginning of the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ponura mixes the second volume of NADA’s three-part mini-mix series entitled ‘Without Weapons’; taken from, and inspired by the imagery of, a chapter title from the 1998 work of British-Ghanaian writer, theorist and filmmaker Kodwo Eshun (1998, More Brilliant than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction).

A special thank you to the artists who gave permission for their music to appear in this mix; a tangled experimentation from Kyiv. A mature left-field sound without a hint of predictability. Full appreciation requires complete attention.

The mix is commemorated by an edition of 50 cassette mixtapes featuring the artwork of Ukrainian painter, Alexander Bogomazov (1916, Fire in Kyiv [charcoal on paper]).
