Meet A/Prof. Jarrod Trevathan - Internet of Things in the Home and in the Environment

Professor Bela Stantic at Griffith University's Big Data and Smart Analytics Lab is pioneering some truly ground-breaking advances in this fast-moving field. 

This interview discusses the highlights of Prof Stantic's work which has earned him an enviable reputation for predictive accuracy. He correctly called the outcome of the last Australian Federal election contrary to the pollsters and public opinion. He also predicted not only the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election and Brexit but also no less than 48 of the 50 US State elections that were also held around the same time.

Bela's approach takes publicly accessible social media data from the likes of Twitter, Flickr and Facebook, and by using a combination of sentiment analysis, location data and the vocabulary that people use, he is able to arrive at remarkably accurate predictions.

Cyber Security: Staying Ahead of the Game with Ernest Foo

'Everybody Lies' author Seth Stephens-Davidowitz on why we tell the (sometimes disturbing) truth online. According to Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, everybody lies to preserve social relations.         How much do you really know about your friends? Your co-workers? Your community and your country? The fact is that much of what we think we know about the people around us is likely to be skewed, because people tend to lie. We lie in conversation, on social media, and in surveys. But there exists an online trove of data that allows us to paint a much more accurate picture of who we really are. That’s the argument of US data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz uses data from the internet – what he calls “the traces of information that billions of people leave on Google, social media, dating, and even pornography sites” to tell us the surprising and sometimes disturbing truth about who we really are. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz spoke with David Tuffley, a senior lecturer in applied ethics and sociotechnical studies at Griffith University, to talk about what he learned.

Professor Paulo de Souza was on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover team that put  "Spirit" and "Opportunity" safely on Mars in January 2004. Both rovers lived well beyond their planned 90-day missions. Opportunity worked nearly 15 years on Mars and broke the driving record for putting the most miles on the odometer.

Closer to home, Paulo is now the Head of the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University. In the second half of the conversation Paulo discusses his vision of IT education in the 21st Century.

Wir haben im Zuge unserer Arbeit 2020 rund um Treuhand und Techno (der in Apolda Anfang der 90er Tekkno hieß)gefragt, verworfen, geprobt, gewickelt, getanzt, gestampft; maschinen, menschen und apoldaer glocken gesehen, gehört, erlebt. Und viel gelernt! Wie: Dass Technotanzen in den 90ern Arbeit war – Arbeit gegen den Totentanz, den die Treuhand mit der ehemaligen DDR-Wirtschaft aufs Parkett legte.

Das Projekt entstand und entwickelt sich unter maßgeblicher Mitarbeit von Zeitzeug:innen aus der Apoldaer Textilindustrie und der 90er-Jahre Tekkno-Subkultur.
