Not only this, but going to nightclubs in places all, especially Detroit and New York, and experiencing the aforementioned music live with amazing lights, overwhelmingly loud sound systems and my beautiful friends <3

Favorite Quote: Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. 

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community:
Don’t just focus on music. Please. Live. Your. Life. Go for a hike, skateboard, bake some cookies, practice shibari (consensually), it doesn't matter. The fastest way to burn out on producing and DJing is to solely focus on just that. In addition, inspiration comes from so many different places outside of just listening to other people’s music, or even your own. Don’t be afraid to be different, we’ve all heard enough “edits” to keep us satisfied going into the summer. 

Also, please remember that community is everything. The whole “self-made” this, that, and whatever, is just not true. You need people and chances are those people probably need you too. Please don’t lose sight of that when trying to achieve your goals, especially at a time when it’s increasingly apparent that the governments/institutions we “trust” make it clear they don’t care (or probably know anything) about any letter or number in LGBTQQIP2SAA. Stay safe, drink water and Free Palestine, Congo, Sudan and all other colonized/exploited nations.

About the mix:
Transitions can be hard. I recently uprooted my life in one city, to move to another. As a result, I’ve been working through a lot of depression, anxiety and frustration, acclimating myself to this new environment. 

In this time, I’ve been listening to a lot of music, in particular a lot of the tracks in this mix. That said, I feel like this mix encompasses a lot of what I have been feeling in this stretch of time, both consciously and unconsciously. Music, no matter how harsh and/or aggressive, can be therapeutic and help redirect a lot of potentially destructive energy into something positive like dancing, or even productive (like work *eyeroll*). Hope this mix finds you well and it makes your day and/or life better!

The Beauty Parlor w/ Nail Salon - 22April2024

"Beneath the cold and iced ledges inside a cavernous cutout through the mountain, an eternal flame blazes and heats the air. The heat circulates the cave. A nearby river splashes into the cave, periodically hitting its flame, never enough to put it out, but just so that it conducts a great steam. A deep reddish hue glows from the flames, blurred with the steam, its bright halo spills out of the cave. 

Beings across the starscape know about this spot. They fly, swim, teleport and dance into it. The sounds of their movements, murmurings and exhales become one with the cycle of heat ensnaring the space.

A large stick brought into the cave by wind strikes the wall, which carries the vibrations and sounds of the heat, pressure, cold waves, and steam cycling. Its sound reverberates from the atoms of the heat and echoes on the walls of the cave. The sound carries across the cold water channel, outward into the depths of the unknown.

Listening through a seashell on the other end of the ocean, is a being playing in the sound, called to hold up the shell to their ear and hear how it was forged. The creatures of the ocean swim through certain sections of the water, where they know the transmission will be reverberant. Like swimming through radio signals, the path from the cave is well traveled.

You are now traveling through the water’s transmission carrying the sound."

Malzof is a DJ and Intermedia Artist based in Pittsburgh, USA and a resident of Sweet Abyss. Malzof plays abstracted grooves- weaving together melodies and rhythms across genre, BPM and era into sonic journeys. Spanning ambient, experimental, broken beat and multiple genres of house, techno and beyond, their sets enchant the dance floor with blissed out beats, fun and freaky vocals, psychedelic percussions and environmental sounds.

With a creative background in video production, live visuals and installation art since the late 2000s, Malzof has taken inspiration from their live performance style to inform the ways in which they DJ, make music and engage with the audience. Across mediums, they are inspired by the synesthetic connection between seeing, hearing and feeling; natural and industrial elements; and exploring community histories of liberation and joy.

Kaleb Marshall @ Gradient, Johnson Valley 04.26.24

Made this back on Jan 4, 2024, and I wasn't entirely happy with it at the time. That was a silly assessment. This mix captures the swirls of calm and restlessness and mindful presence and melancholic nostalgia I was feeling on the return from my great sabbatical odyssey of late 2023. I had become reacquainted with psychedelic substances during this time (hadn't taken them much since my college days), a process that affected my understanding and love of the art of DJing. I learned a lot about myself then, and even more about the alchemy of improvisation at the decks. This was recorded while I was coming up on LSD, starting pretty shortly after taking the tabs, and the mix really captures the wooziness and mercurial emotionality I was feeling during the come-up. It's not perfect, but it's also one of my favorite mixes I've ever made. Nothing fails.
