Last year I captured calls from two chatting adult Whooper Swans at the Bothnian coast. This year they were accompanied by two juveniles. One night the conversation between the swans was intense, it almost felt listening to a concerto.

Apparitions (2022, Part 1, excerpt). Commissioned by the Swedish Radio. “Apparitions” has nearly a religious title for several reasons. The music conveys the spiritual world in the form of soundscapes with ghostly moods. Prolonged dark sounds are lightened by choir-like flashes of light and overtones. Pop-like rhythms are mixed with hissing, whispers and multitones, Rubber balls run along strings, the double bass screaming loudly and the bassoon hissing like a teapot with boiling water. Blowing sounds roll in like the waves on the beach and the voices inhale like asthmatics do. In my work I use a whole palette of different advanced playing techniques on several instruments combined with voices and electronic material. For several years I have been collecting sounds, mostly in Sweden and Iceland. Recorded sounds of harpsichord (Guðrún Óskarsdóttir), double bass (Jonas Nilsson), voice (Matilda Andersson and Mirjam Tally) and bassoon (Anders Matell).

In the work ten from the forty five haiku have been chronologically selected and composed into five main parts, with two short, almost instrumental, passages between the first and last parts. There can thus be two haiku in one and the same part. Instrumental and vocal parts constantly go in and out of each other throughout the piece.

Hemligheten IV(2014)

This is a track from Concerto Palatino's new CD (to be released June
2023 for the label Passacaille)called, Ex tenebris ad lucem: Venetian Music of Penitence from a time of Plague (1575-77). The CD juxtaposes music from the Venetian plague years with a newly commissioned work of American composer Robert Kyr. Here in Giovanni Gabrieli's 10 voice motet, a cornetto plays the top voice with four singers in the first choir, while an alto voice sings the with four trombones in the second.

This work takes a close look at the relationship between the physical body of performers and their wind instruments.  I am particularly interested in how sound is produced as an extension of human breath and is voiced through these instruments. Both conscious control and incidental and inadvertent breath allows the performer to affect the sound.  Additionally, the size of the instrument is in direct relationship to the amount of air needed to power the instrument.  These relationships are visually pronounced by using one of the largest against the smallest instrument in the modern recorder family.
