Madeleine splits her time in-between Brno - Bratislava - Prague,  and has recently started co-organising hypnotic deep techno gigs as @spektrumkolektiv in Bratislava, where the Japanese legend Takaaki Itoh was the first guest. Eclectic and electrifying. Something that seems to be missing in the city... Not a rave but a hypnotizing techno journey.

If there’s an artist to successfully traverse the treacherous divide between drum and bass, breakbeat and techno it’s Christopher Jarman’s prevailing alias, Kamikaze Space Programme. With roots indebted to the music he released on labels like Renegade Hardware under his Raiden alias, his abstract, field recorded, industrial and broken admission into the annals of electronica has seen his music backed, supported and released by the heaviest of renowned labels - namely Luke Slater's Mote Evolver, Mord Records to Osiris Music uk, Mord and Mote Evolver, WNCL, to the freshly minted Eomac’s Eotrax and further afield on Trust via Kamikaze Space Programme’s electro-minded wares.

Having proved himself a razor-sharp edge of meticulous drum and bass production when rising up through the ranks of the genre’s definitive platforms, Kamikaze Space Programme’s hybrid sound, has joined the dots through a constellation of labels inhibiting a grey zone between UK club music and steely brutalist industrial textures.

An accomplished session musician and avid field recording artist, Jarman’s music by and large is made up of foley sound design and sonic experimentation using bespoke apparatus and homemade microphones. Capturing internal resonances and electromagnetic radiation of objects, re-amplified or organic, classic hardware dub mixing completes the Kamikaze Space Programme aesthetic. Having worked with BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Rotterdam’s Re:Vive initiative too, there’s no denying Jarman of his credentials, with his repute as a formidable DJ and live act backed by his place in heavy weight line ups across the globe, be they at Berghain, Kompass Klub or Dommune to performing at festivals like Atonal, Krake and Kiev’s Next Sound.

Other collaborative projects, furthermore, have found their way through Simon Shreeve (aka Mønic, of Downwards Records and Kryptic Minds fame) to his Osiris Musik collaboration with Adam Winchester (Appleblips) under the moniker, Dot Product. He’s also proved a deft hand in the remix by taking on productions by Planetary Assault Systems, Emika and The Exaltics to NY’s The Horrorist.

Encompassing the most brutal of industrial sound design alongside intrinsic field recordings and the sleeker, low tempos and frenetic energy of jungle, breakbeats and drum and bass, Jarman’s ability to maneuver between genre and style sees the music of Kamikaze Space Programme defy classification while spiralling from one nether-spectrum of sound to the next.

"If, like many others, your introduction to Black Merlin began only from the point of the highly successful Hipnotik Tradisi, your curiosity might have been piqued enough to attempt a little digging of your own, only to be gobsmacked once you realize that you’d been missing out on 90% of a highly productive, almost a decade long career that had preceded the Black Merlin stage name. By the time his jungle-infected LP arrived, Thompson had already carved out several niches for himself in various corners of the electronic music world.

Way back in 2008, Thompson was already making music as one half of Spectral Empire, a duo act with fellow Brit Kyle Martin. Since then, and in between his solo creations as Black Merlin, he has collaborated with partners under no less than two other guises (Kommune, Karamika). His musical catalogue is nothing short of spectacular, having released on such diverse labels as Omnidisc, Bird Scarer Records, Island of The Gods, LN-CC, Common Thread, Pinkman, Berceuse Heroique, SORN, ESP Institute, Boysnoize Records and Jealous God, among others. The recurring theme here appears to be one of constant reinvention, as the genres he has dabbled with oscillates from warped spacey disco, synth-driven krautrock, droney minimal wave, retrogressive EBM, to the hypnotic dark techno of recent years.
From the outside looking in, Thompson’s career trajectory thus far appears to have been less dictated by fickle industry trends and more intrinsically motivated. Running on his own internal clock, he’s been releasing music and reinventing himself at a steady and relentless pace both before and after Hipnotik Tradisi brought his name to the forefront. Few musicians would be tempted to stray from a formula that has tasted success. Not Black Merlin. Following hot on the heels of his 2016 tour de force are already two completely different records by Thompson, all within the span of a year. Clearly, he wasted little time basking in past glory.
Any bid to decode this artist and reduce him to a mere label for one’s own categorizing convenience would be a futile endeavor; it’s akin to a cynic’s vain attempt to deconstruct and unravel one magician’s trick: you’ll likely come out none the wiser and risk missing out on the pure and simple appreciation of his art form. Much better to let each of his music pieces speak for itself."
