Carrier presents Tender Spirits, the third turn on his eponymous series that explores his abstractions at its most sparse and cerebral.

Space maintains great purpose for Guy Brewer, having experimented with this previously for multiple drum-focused missives as Carrier. On his latest release, he treads deeper into the furthest regions of dub deconstruction, with Tender Spirits offering a serene path to the inbetween.

Across 8+ minutes, Light Candles, To Mark The Way moves towards the muted sublime; a gentle half time’d bliss that ebbs and floats across the enveloping mist. Slow Punctures gradually returns to dusk, eerily surveying the hollowed-out remains of its dub architecture with an off-kilter lurch. Carpathian echoes further in stark reduction, a weightless atonal zone anchored by the abstracted pressure suspended within.

Tender Spirits tracks Carrier at exciting new parallels, unfurling his most ascendant and capacious music to date.

We Do Recover, the new album from Powell and his first album proper on his own Diagonal Records, is a vitalising record of recovery and a statement of reassurance. The music is intensely emotional and lean, and forms a uniquely expressive story that opens up new ground in the artists’s bizarre continuum of synthesised sound — this time triggered by experiences of grief and addiction.   

The suicide of one of his life-long friends in 2024 was a life-changing loss which eternally altered Powell’s life, and consequently his music. A period of recovery followed, one accompanied by the assembling of this album from hours of music made between 2018 and 2025. “After my friend’s death I felt I went into a tailspin, but really, I was already in one,” he says. “I found myself unable to handle anything – my way of coping was always to run away and escape. I realised it was going to kill me, so I made some changes. It made me see the music I had been making through a different lens, one that mirrored my experience of recovery. It’s not linear, it’s often difficult, but there is beauty there if you look hard enough. I wanted it to be a message of hope, if only for myself.”  

Powell has existed of late in an intensive mode of creation that utilises stochastic processes (probabilistic events) and a particular sonic palette. But where previous releases – such as the many prongs of his a ƒolder project, or the hyper-synthetic Piano Music 1—7 on Editions Mego – interrogated and developed formal processes for synthesised sound, on We Do Recover the processes are subsumed as tools for expression. What unfolds is an extended suite of minimal music that articulates and traces an intensive period of upheaval, pain, and hope; tight envelopes of sonic architecture are led astray; energies explode beyond bounds previously set. We can feel the collapse of control, and an overflowing sense of something starting anew. It is, in turn, surprising, baffling and beautiful.

The story begins with the radiance and glittering synthetic tones of ‘All These Feelings’—like looking up into the vastness of the night sky. By track seven the wonder has become unsteady, with wayward keys, stochastic shapes, brittle fizz and hurried words emerging, unprompted, from the stillness. There is percussive brutalism in ‘Relapse’, and ’Afterlife’ brings weight and solemnity in its funereal refrain. Four-to-the-‘floor ‘Newborn’ turns the lights on as an equilibrium of sorts is sought and wrestled with, before ‘So Rivers Plunge’ sings like nobody’s listening — a MIDI orchestra warming up in the box while the laptop remains asleep. Closing track ‘The Bitter End’ is no ending at all, instead promising a future in shimmering torques, caught on the wind of hope. It returns to us, with renewed awe, the starlight we began with. 

WDR LIVE will premier as an expanded audio-visual show in London at the ICA in London on 4th October — a specially-curated evening of mutant electronic music featuring Florian Hecker and Marcin Pietruszewski, and as a rare live appearance of Concrete Fence (Regis x Russell Haswell). The show continues Powell’s ongoing collaboration with Swiss filmmaker Michael Amstad and Norwegian visual artist Marte Eknæs, who worked on the film/image component of a ƒolder. Amstad and Eknæs also took the photograph on the album cover, a technicolour image of a pregnant male seahorse, its swollen belly at once fragile and beautiful.

WDR is the first full-length solo album Powell has ever released on his own label Diagonal – all other releases have been EPs, 12”s, or collaborations — and so it represents a landmark in his catalogue in more ways than one. “I nearly added a question mark to the album title,” he says. “Recovery is a long process, and the album reflects that. There’s a lot of short termism in the world right now, but recovery, in whatever guise, is the opposite of that… It takes time.”

In 1978, at the University of London, the Physicist David T. Kemp made an unusual discovery. Kemp noticed that faint sounds, known as Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), revealed the existence of the cochlear amplifier, a mechanism responsible for sound sensitivity and frequency resolution. This discovery proved that the ear is an active rather than passive organ. 

Following this discovery the experimental music world embraced these findings by incorporating them into sound works. Maryanne Amacher was a notable early pioneer of this technique resulting in large scale sound works, the likes of which audiences had never encountered prior. Since these early explorations the use of OAEs has spread more widely in the experimental music landscape, notably by Editions Mego artists Florian Hecker and Marcus Schmickler.

Stefan Juster aka Jung An Tagen is known for conceptual works and has a large back catalogue of intriguing ideas and sounds. Revenge of the Speaker People is another adventurous release, one which takes the Otoacoustic discoveries of David T. Kemp and applies them to a techno framework. OAEs are fragile and can collapse quickly when combined with other elements. Jung An Tagen’s success in combining OAEs with beats is therefore quite an achievement, without precedent. 

The first CD comprises the  results of Juster’s experiments, resulting in some of the strangest techno committed to digital since the initial burst of the Mego label. A series of head spinning, ear tickling extreme electronic miniatures bleed in a continuous form. This adventurous and playful music would likely have many a raver run to the bathroom. There is a tangible subversive delight in mixing in such sounds to what is ostensibly ‘club music’.

Because the record had this clear divide of beat + otoacoustics the idea came to see how the material would lend itself to a series of remixes. The second CD has remix contributions from a selection of artists from the Editions Mego stable alongside Juster’s own ETAT imprint along with DJ Nervoso from the Príncipe crew. The results are a headspinning variety of Otoacoustic mayhem as the likes of Evol, Thomas Brinkmann, Ellen Phan, Nik Colk Void and others fold these initial bizarre sounds into even more twisted shapes. Revenge of the Speaker People is a daring, playful and audacious release. One that will baffle your ears, neighbours and dancefloor clients.

In an intricate lattice of ever-evolving electro exploration, Samuel Van Dijk (@mohlao) is back on Delsin with a new EP. Under his VC-118A alias, the Helsinki based producer presents a richly textured, cinematic strain of machine funk that reaches beyond dancefloor functionality to test the expressive potential locked within electro's crisp rhythmic framework.

There's a melancholic mood hovering over Avian as Van Dijk allows a subtle edge of distortion to creep into his flickering drum programming. The end result is a pensive sound that touches on the moodiness of orchestral composition, unfurling patiently across extended run times without losing focus. With his characteristic attention to detail and broad dynamic range, Van Dijk continues to offer up a sophisticated, emotionally-charged strain of electro like no other.

We have had an almost lifelong obsession with SMERSH, a duo from New Jersey consiting of Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard. They started making music together in the late 70s and they have since released tons of cassettes, a bunch of vinyls and have a mythical place in the electronic music scene. Chris passed away in 1995 but Mike continued making music on his own, often as Super Flower. We asked him to make a mix of his music for us! And he amazingly agreed. Here it is. Listen on repeat.

NJ residents Chris Shepard and Mike Mangino shaped commercial duo Smersh in 1981, recording loud techno tracks with primitive synths and drum machines within their cellar studio hideout. They recorded every Mon, wrote a music from scratch, documented it, rather than performed it once again, existing solely like a studio room project rather than giving live shows. The duo’s sound mixed severe, screaming vocals and distorted guitars with experimental however danceable machine rhythms, developing a lo-fi precursor to a lot of the popular commercial and EBM music that could emerge through the pursuing decades. Smersh created an international pursuing through their countless self-released tapes, resulting in vinyl and Compact disc releases on the few European brands, but they continued to be very obscure, and ceased to be found when Shepard passed on in 1945. A complete Smersh discography will be challenging to compile, because so many from the group’s recordings had been released by means of limited cassettes independently label), however the duo became a substantial existence in the ’80s cassette underground, showing up on important tape labels. RRRecords released The Defeat from 20,000 Egg Cartons, an LP offering monitors from Smersh’s many cassettes, in 1986, and U.K. label Deceased Man’s Curve released another LP, The Area of the Pet THAT FOLKS Don’t Like, through the same calendar year. Belgian EBM/commercial label KK Information released Smersh’s THE BEST Tale Ever Distorted EP in 1988, accompanied by the full-length Emmanuelle Would go to Bangkok in 1990. Börft Information, a long-running Swedish experimental/techno label from the music group Frak, released Smersh’s “3 Bangs” 7″ in 1991, accompanied by a cassette known as Depth Charge in 1993. German label Vuz Information released Smersh’s 7″ EP Super-Deformed in 1994. After Chris Shepard dropped his struggle with cystic fibrosis in 1994, placing a finish to Smersh as well as the Atlas Ruler label, Mike Mangino continuing with other tasks, and eventually set up Mirandette Well-known, a CD-R label that released archival Smersh materials aswell as recordings by his newer musical efforts. German label Bastet Recordings released Content Spaceship, a restricted CD-R Smersh compilation, in 1999. A long time afterwards, Smersh finally begun to receive long-overdue identification, as websites and free type r / c like WFMU rediscovered their pioneering recordings. San Francisco-based Dark Entries (operate by Josh Cheon, a Rutgers alum who utilized to DJ at students radio station on the Piscataway campus from the college or university) released Cassette House animals, a 2012 double-LP compilation including 17 paths from throughout Smersh’s whole lifespan, which range from severe, guitar-driven commercial to electro instrumentals. 3 years afterwards, the label released Super Large Solid Waste, a far more streamlined single-LP collection concentrating on severe, rhythmic commercial dance paths. In 2016, Dark Entries released Selected Deep Home Anthems, an EP comprising four tracks extracted from Smersh’s 1991 Deep Home Anthems cassette.
