Tek - The Truth EP

Stacked with fiery rhythms, explosive drums, and razor sharp sound design, Tek is back with another round of speaker smashing tracks. On his last release he proved he was one to watch, and The Truth EP solidifies this a thousand fold. Each track is laden with everything that defines the deep underside of the genre: spacious yet intense soundscapes, drums so thick they defy the imagination, and overwhelming subs that subvert the senses. There's no denying the inherent power in this release, and your only choice is to dive right in. 

With a meandering storm of pads, “Antidote” subtly builds the tension from the start. As it hits an unbearable peak, the drop rises from out of nowhere to launch the song into the stratosphere. A constantly shifting and mutating world of sounds collide in this track - the sub work is especially ingenious, alternating between pure driving lows and a body convulsing mutant wobble. Using a ghosty vocal sample along with bubbling sci-fi fx, each section counterpoints the other to deliver the deep yet vigorous energy that epitomizes the track.

“Delirium” is a serious workout straight from the black hole. It is an infectious exploration through the world of sub bass - the sub is staggering, reaching depths and tones previously unheard of. The pop of the snare and thump of the kick further solidify the overpowering nature this track has devoted itself to. As it keeps thrusting forward, the pacing of the rhythm melds effortlessly with the ferocity of the bassline; add in multiple doses of frenetic shuffles, and you get a tune that breaks the sound barrier along with the dancefloor.

Tek - Delirium [OUT NOW]

Closing out the release is the dark chasm of sound known as “Olympus.” A rambunctious frenzy of shuffling hats, gravity defying subs, and hypnotic motifs morph into a unified force that defines the track. Refusing to let up, it instantly transports you to a pitch black ravine seated between the most sinister of mountains. The meticulous attention to detail in this track is readily apparent; the precise layering and tonal character of the elements create unexpected dynamic shifts, and is exactly how it continuously draws you in deeper.

Tek - Delirium [Premiere]

This year, MTA Records will be releasing four seasonal EPs, each with a collection of original tracks from new and rising producers. For the spring edition (out Mar. 18), they've collected brand new beats from Felon, Khésis, Kasbo, Volatile Cycle, Mitekiss and Vacant, the latter's being our personal favourite. Vacant's "Eternal" features deep, undulating bass tones swelling and subsiding beneath echoing vocal samples and a techy arpeggio that sweep in and out of the mix, all of which is guided along by a skittish—but by no means imposing—percussion line. You couldn't really ascribe one particular genre to this one; elements of ambient electronica, drum & bass, footwork and more can be heard in the mix and yet, as you'll hear below, there's more to it than that.

One of the few artists on the drum and bass circuit to have really crafted his (yes solo now!) own sound from scratch has to be Jam Thieves and this killer 5 track EP presented by Serial Killaz is certainly testament to the ability to be both instantly recognisable and bloody good at the same time.

The ‘Sativa’ EP kicks your block off straight away with menacing chords and drums typical of this level of production. You will notice little cheeky stabs and effects all over the place which no doubt adds to the tension the title track creates plus that ever so wobbling bassline.

‘Paranoia’.. You what mate? Nah, not us. The ‘Simon Says’ sample is pretty god damn demanding here, just make sure you’re not following an MCs request to “sit down, sit down, sit doooooown’ during the drop. Some grand piano licks run forward into ‘Bizness’, complimented by some more snazzy breakbeats and a grotty old bassline with just a touch of distortion making it that perfect accessory to whatever Jam Thieves gets up to under the cover of darkness. ‘Heavy Duty’ has a kind of Robot Wars vibe going on so if you’re still into that kind of thing, it’s the perfect combination of mental destruction and flaming swords but in a musical form. 

Closing the doors on the EP, Jam Thieves really went to town with ‘Situation’ and if you really want to appreciate the levels to this track, it’s very important to use some good monitors and a whopping great sub. We don’t mean a 10” either, save that for your pop and bass melodies. Check the vocal sample too while you’re at it.
