Disquiet Junto Project 0572: Rhythm Kit
The Assignment: Make a beat that someone else will add to.

Note: This project is the first of a two-parter. You don’t need to participate in both, and you can easily participate in the second one (next week) even if you don’t participate in the first one.

Instruction: Record a beat with the intension that someone other than yourself will add something to it at a later date. It’s preferable that you record something that lasts between one and three minutes, but it’s also fine to record something shorter with the intention that someone will loop it — or something longer, for that matter.

I always like when one of the more beat-oriented prompts comes up because it gets me to think about rhythm tools, which I'm fairly inconsistent with. 

I thought I would would use my modular synth to generate the beat starting with a trio of samplers triggered by dividing and multiplying clock dividers. The resulting three samples are then routed through some signal manipulation: a wasp filter, stereo delay and Make Noise Morphagene. I also had some fun with a sample and hold which controls the pitch CV of one of the samples.

I found this old discarded beat on my computer with not much memory of creating it. According to the file stamp its from November 2020. Think I'd been reading Pynchon's Mason and Dixon around the time which is why its called "Hsi and Ho"

I started with 12 glass bottles filled with different amounts of water.  Rolled a d12 8 times to get my 8 note scale. From here I rolled a d8 4 times to get my 4 main melody notes. The remaining notes were the replacement notes. Then I played each note in 4  different patterns. I rolled a d4 for the pattern and a d8 for the note in the specific pattern for all note selections..

TV ANNOUNCEMENT: A House That is Neglected is a House That May Be Doomed! (disquiet0377)

“The most indubitable respect in which ideas have helped mankind is numbers,” wrote the philosopher and logician Bertrand Russell. “We have become, in certain respects, progressively less like animals [in] that forethought more and more dominates [our] impulses.”

Russell believed that all human knowledge was, at most, a best guess based upon knowledge attained to that point. In his 1903 book The Principles of Mathematics, Russell argued that mathematical concepts were immune from doubt because they were constructed entirely of logic. An algorithm is really nothing more than a process — a set of rules to be followed in order to achieve a result.

The logic breaks down because life and language are slippery, inexact and subjective. A famous example of Russell’s Paradox is the barber who shaves everybody in town except those who shave themselves. Who shaves the barber? If he shaves himself, then he doesn’t shave himself; if he doesn’t, then he does. Groucho Marx once remarked that he would never join a club who would have him as a member. Suss Müsik doesn’t really make music, nor do we do much sussing. Paradoxes abound.

For this piece, a simple four-note phrase was played on piano utilizing a scale of 8 notes. The 2431 algorithm was applied not only to note sequences, but also to sustain levels and attack times. This created a weird phasing effect during transitions. The algorithm was also applied to a “scale” of wordless vocal recordings by Suss Müsik friend, collaborator and mentor Wm. Wolfgang Allen. Expect more such collaborations from this team in the very near future. 

The piece is titled Russellian. Many thanks to NorthWoods for contributing this inventive and interesting assignment to the Disquiet Junto community.

Disquiet Junto Project 0377: Algorithms Assemble
The Assignment: Have fun with rules applied to scales, in coordination with the Algorithmic Art Assembly.

This week’s project is being done with the Algorithmic Art Assembly, “a brand new two day conference and music festival, showcasing a diverse range of artists who are using algorithmic tools and processes in their works.” It’s being held in San Francisco on March 22 and 23, 2019. More information at aaassembly.org. The project is lightly adapted from one proposed by Junto member Charlie Kramer (aka NorthWoods).

Step 1: Define a scale of 8 notes (or sounds).

Step 2: Create a melody with 4 notes from the scale resulting from Step 1.

Step 3: Replace note 2 in the melodic sequence from Step 2 with an unused note (selected deterministically or randomly). Then do this for note 4, then for note 3, and then for note 1.

Step 4: Reintroduce the first melody as counterpoint to the result of Step 3. This establishes a pair of notes at each point in time.

Step 5: Repeat the algorithm on these pairs. Repeat to create triplets.

Step 6: Sequence variations to create a piece of music.

Extra credit: Do the same with note durations and velocities (e.g., 8 possibilities, 4 choices).

DSQT0377 - Algorithmic Tech Idxxiii

A comparison of SSM and SassLite, both using twin pairs of Primo EM172 capsules per channel.  Both units weigh the same.  One is commercially produced, the other is home-made.  Not much in it really.  The SSM image is more centred than the SASS which has a wider image.  Rigs are set up one metre apart, 6th September 2012, early morning near a dam in NSW, Australia.  Noisy Friarbirds are calling in the distance to the left and a pair if Australasian Little Grebe call occasionally near the centre.  Both rigs are running to Olympus LS10 recorders, levels set at Low 10, no low cut.  No filtering.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series.
