SKTTRBRAIN has been deep in electronic music her entire life. In 2008 she began building her own mixes which she calls “audio-journaling” to express the intimacy each podcast has to life in the moment of its creation. Into a large range of styles, SKTTRBRAIN often attempts to ‘break-genres’ by designing sets that push the standard view of categorical musical fusion while manifesting multi-layer spaces with time-specific bits of original sampling.

Viaje (Voyage) is a simpler mix that focuses on the deeper, more minimal, and somewhat strange colors of house, tech house, and techno. A set thats tracks would originally play between 125-135 bmp has been purposely slowed down in its entirety to 114, which gives the podcast an energy closer to that of 'hybrid dub'.

Back in the day, drums were used as signals for festivities and war because their sounds travelled the furthest. Azu Tiwaline has long understood that. A master in the dark arts of percussion, she makes deep and profound percussive music that seems to communicate forgotten rituals from centuries past. Her sound is dense, as if pulled from the depths of the Sahara desert in Tunisia, yet still feels spacious thanks to polyrhythmic contortions and sparse, elegant melodies.

Her productions largely fall into the confines of percussive techno, but unlike the genre's springier variants, her dubby textures and psychedelic rhythms command seriousness and move with immensity. Her Livity Sound debut, the Magnetic Service EP from 2020, connected Amazigh music with dub and techno and is a masterclass in restraint and hypnosis. Her latest release, The Fifth Dream, continues to showcase her skills in balancing light and dark tones using field recordings from her home in Tunisia's El Djerid desert, minimal ambient techno and haunting notes.

Mirroring her discography, this RA Podcast features plenty of twisted rhythms, trippy techno and straightforward club cuts. Created for movement rather than hypnosis, these selections show off a different side of her drum palette—perky breaks and syncopated kicks—wrapped in her usual weighty atmospheres.

Here's some worms from Kris:  Now a much-anticipated new year’s tradition, Nina Walsh’s fourth annual Sonic Treasures mix might be expected to celebrate hard-won triumphs such as finally releasing Phonox Nights, the final album she recorded with lifelong creative partner Andrew Weatherall, which hung precariously in the ether as 2023 dawned. Now with that mission accomplished, and after this stunningly evocative new mix blasts off with two previously unheard Phonox Nights sizzlers that didn’t fit on the album, Nina unveils All That Bluster, the long-awaited Nina and the Fireflies album that will be her next major release in 2024. Partly comprising her lost soundtrack to Killing Eve, the album’s supernatural psych-folk gumbo emerges as a companion set to Phonox Nights, simultaneously recorded with guitarist Franck Alba at Facility4 and coming with four remixes that were among the last completed by Mr Weatherall before he passed away nearly four years ago. This highly personal odyssey climaxes with three unreleased gems from the bulging Walsh-Weatherall vault, starting with legendary 20-minute epic ‘The Acid Trip’ built around Andrew’s hilariously vivid account of his first LSD experience, captured at rehearsals in 2016. Once again, Nina has gloriously pulled off highlighting past achievements with both eyes set firmly on the future. Happy new year!
